Charlotte Casiraghi has described the ‘liberating’ nature of her relationship with her mother ever since having children of her own, explaining that it opened up an opportunity to get ‘feel closer’.
The daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco told the latest issue of Town & Country Magazine that parenthood has unleashed a ‘transmission of the maternal link’.
‘Of course, you have more empathy and you understand more things,’ the 36-year-old told the outlet. ‘When you become a mother there is the fact that your mother accepts that she’s not the only one who’s a mother.’
Charlotte has a son Raphaël, eight, who she shares with her ex-boyfriend, Gad Elmaleh, and welcomed his brother Balthazaar, four, with her husband Dmitri in October 2018.
The niece of Prince Albert of Monaco added: ‘A lot of women feel that they have that power as well, to give life, and it’s not something that they just owe to their mother.’
Charlotte – who has two sons, Raphaël, eight, and Balthazar, four – added that motherhood is ‘hard to sum up’
Charlotte added that motherhood is ‘hard to sum up’, saying: ‘I think every day has hard and amazing moments’.
‘Every day you go through moments when you worry for your children or when they exhaust you, and then you go through moments when you share so much with them and you don’t even question the fact that they’re the most important thing in your life.’
Touching more on the ‘complex’ relationships between mothers and daughters, she explained that she tries not to speak about the ‘very private’ relationship with hers.

The granddaughter of Grace Kelly also told the outlet that having the public be interested in your life is not necessarily something you should be proud of

‘I don’t necessarily want to reveal everything that’s going on between us, but it’s always ambivalent,’ she said. ‘I feel that even when you have your own kids, you’re still struggling to have your own space.’
Charlotte also touched on how the women in her family helped her navigate a life in the public eye with a ‘sense of effort and discipline’ – using the French term ‘exigences en soi-meme’ – which she explained as the expectation of oneself to live up to a moral standard.
The granddaughter of Grace Kelly also told the outlet that having the public be interested in your life ‘is not necessarily something you should be proud of or be overwhelmed by’.
The royal explained that she makes a conscious choice not to give importance to certain things – such as feeling people staring on her in a restaurant – as the most vital things to her are ‘what she builds personally’.
Charlotte is the second child of Princess Caroline of Hanover and the late Italian businessman Stefano Casiraghi, who died in 1990.
She is accomplished equestrian and one of Chanel’s most recent ambassadors.
Earlier this year, the socialite wowed Paris Fashion Week attendees as she rode her horse around the designer’s runway, cantering down the catwalk on a horse while resplendent in its signature black tweed.
Anna Wintour and Pharrell Williams were among the A-listers watching.
