Harry Styles’ stans have had quite the year. Between his new album, global tour, 15-night residency at Madison Square Garden, and leading role in Don’t Worry Darling, Harry has been keeping busy. His journey into the acting game continues this month with the new romance, My Policeman.

What’s the movie about?

Harry stars in the film alongside The Crown’s Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, and Linus Roache. The story comes from a 2012 novel of the same name, set in Brighton, England in 1957, following a closeted gay police officer (Harry) who marries a schoolteacher while keeping a secret relationship with a museum curator. The film jumps between decades in time, but beyond that, no spoilers here. Until premiere day, only readers of the novel, written by Bethan Roberts, will know how this story ends.

The story takes place during a time (really not that long ago) when being out publicly could mean brutal persecution for LGBTQ+ people. In the 1950s, gay people were not only shamed and alienated, but could be arrested and labeled “sexual perverts” or “deviants.” The fictional characters in My Policeman exist in the very real tension that plagued society at this time in history. In fact, it was illegal to be gay in the UK until 1967, when the Sexual Offences Act was passed, decriminalizing private homosexual acts between men over the age of 21. My Policeman is the latest film to remind us that freedom and safety have always been a privilege enjoyed by very few, and that the 1950s really weren’t that long ago.

Is the movie actually good?

The film, though obviously important, has gotten mixed reviews from critics. But let’s be real: with Harry at the helm, it will probably be more successful than the reviews would imply. His previous project, Don’t Worry Darling, also received mixed reviews and survived a disastrous press tour, but ultimately earned more than $70 million at the box office. And for My Policeman, the film’s team has their eyes on all the awards. In a Variety exclusive, it was revealed that Amazon Studios will be pushing for supporting acting nominations for the entire cast, including Harry Styles and Emma Corrin.
