There was reason to celebrate amid all the sadness of Neighbours’ untimely end, as Jane Harris (Annie Jones) and Mike Young (Guy Pearce) got back together after three decades apart, and we’re sobbing.

The two characters, whose romance kept viewers glued to their TVs in the 1980s, reunited on-screen earlier today, as Mike rode back into Ramsay Street for the first time since 1989.

Jane, as viewers know, has been struggling to get over the fact that beau Clive Gibbons (Geoff Paine) has been keeping secrets from her, but she was seconds away from giving him another chance when Mike showed up.

Clive knew full well that he stood little chance of winning Jane’s affection now that her one true love was back in town, and despite 30 years apart, it was clear that the chemistry was still very much there for the former flames.

Neighbours’ final ever episode, which aired on Friday (July 29), saw Jane give Mike a tour of the houses of Ramsay Street, which were all on the market.

A series of flashbacks reminded viewers of special little moments of the pair’s earlier years in the serial, culminating with an iconic throwback to the moment Jane – or should we say Plain Jane Superbrain – received her makeover.

Mike, however, was quick to remind her that he thought she was beautiful with or without her glasses then, before adding that he still does.

Be still, our beating hearts.

The two continued to bond, much to the dismay of Clive, who proceeded to drown his sorrows in The Waterhole, before getting into a squabble on the street with Mike!

Jane then took some time out to contemplate her place in Ramsay Street, given that daughter Nicolette Stone (Charlotte Chimes) was considering moving to New York.

Mike, meanwhile, received some advice from former regular and Neighbours icon Des Clarke (Paul Keane), who told him to fight for Jane.

Mike, evidently still in love with Jane, took her for a ride on his signature motorbike, before returning to the street with a pretty huge revelation to make.

Despite Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaighte) and Shane Ramsay (Peter O’Brien) showing interest, it was he who bought No.24!

Jane was taken aback, but she struggled to hide her glee when Mike revealed his true feelings for her, admitting that he’s still very much in love with her.

‘I realise that this is probably all a bit much’, he said, ‘But if I was here, we could things slowly and see where this goes’.

Jane took a moment, before looking to Mike’s daughter Sam (Henrietta Graham) to see what she made of the whole situation.

‘Amazing!’, exclaimed Sam, and a tearful Jane reiterated this very word, delighted to have got her happy ever after, as she hugged Mike once more.

Subsequent scenes saw the duo reunite with old friends and good neighbours Charlene and Scott Robinson (Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan), and they all enjoyed a drink on the balcony of Mike’s new home with Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) and Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis), as Neighbours came to a joyful end after 37 years on air.
