YOU can have your cake and eat it with some cheap and cheerful additions.
Poundland recently launched a Chris The Caterpillar cake for £4.50 to take on Colin and Co from the other supermarkets.
But you can turn a shop-bought cake into a showstopper at home with these tricks.
TOP CAKE: Craft a custom cake topper by printing out the birthday person’s name in a pretty font.
Place it on coloured card and cut it out. Then tape cocktail sticks at either end and pop it on top of your pre-bought cake for a nice personal touch.
AN ICE IDEA: No time to bake? Pick up a raspberry sponge cake for £1.50 and two packs of ready roll icing for £1.80 at Tesco.

Roll out one packet of icing and cover the cake, then roll out the other and use a sharp knife to cut out the age they are celebrating.
Dab water on the iced numbers to stick to the cake.
DIY DECORATING: Buy a cake covered in buttercream and act like a professional dessert decorator by picking up sweets, fairy cakes and chocolates in different shades of the same colour.
Add the smaller cakes on top first, to add height, and then sprinkle your different sweets and chocolate around them. The buttercream will act as glue. The more sweets, the better.
PROPER GOOD IDEA: Cheat your way to a professional bake by using props. A princess cake can be created by placing a tiara on an iced cake, with a pretty ribbon around the base.

For Lego lovers, pop the toy bricks on top of the cake to spell out their name and you could even add a mini figurine that looks like them.
SURPRISE INSIDE: Pick up a red velvet cake, £2.25 at Asda, and separate the top layer from the bottom.
Cut a hole and fill with sweets to create a surprise “explosion” cake, as the treats will topple out when you cut into it.
