Gen Z declares war on leggings! New ‘hot girl’ trend emerges on TikTok – as fashion fans reveals what you should be wearing instead
- Gen-Z has declared that leggings are no longer in style, according to TikTok
- The phenomenon began after one user went to crowdsource an ‘errands outfit’
- Gen-Z can be categorized as those who were born between the years 1997-2012
Regular old leggings are no longer in style, according to the gospel of Gen Z — instead, they’ve declared that slipping on a pair of flared leggings will get you a seat at the cool kid’s table.
As many millennials have shown off their casual outfits on TikTok recently, tons of Gen Zs, who are those born between 1997 and 2012, have criticized their looks, right down to the bottom of their pants.
In a now-viral TikTok video posted earlier this month, user Hannah Brown, who dubs herself as a ‘hot girl anthropologist,’ took to the platform to crowdsource exactly how people are styling themselves to run errands.
During the clip, Brown showed off what she was wearing to run to Target, which included a chunky, beige-colored oversized sweater, a pair of leggings, white socks and sneakers.
In the viral clip, TikTok user Hannah Brown asked viewers what they were wearing to run errands, to which many replied that she should be wearing ‘flared leggings’

‘What do we think?’ she asked. ‘Tell me what we’re wearing to run errands.’
However, in the comments, she was bombarded with people telling her that typical leggings were now out of fashion.
‘We should all collectively burn our leggings,’ one person wrote. ‘Let’s be honest they are not flattering on the majority.’
‘Def gotta change those leggings to flare leggings + platform uggs + hair in claw clip + small hoop earrings,’ another typed.
Someone else agreed, ‘I’m not a hot girl, but I wear “flared leggings,” cropped sweaters or fitted cropped tops with a cute jacket, and fake platform Uggs.’
‘Flare leggings, regular leggings out diva,’ a commenter seconded.
Another pointed out, ‘Primary thing here is the leggings! Go flared leggings (yoga pants). Also Nike is not it anymore. Adidas Sambas or New Balances are the sneakers rn.’
In a follow-up video posted a few days later, Brown ran through the list of tips she compiled from the comments about how to get a ‘hot girl errand’ outfit, and flared leggings were top of mind.

In the comments section, many users claimed that flared leggings were more in-trend than regular leggings

‘Apparently we’re not wearing leggings anymore,’ Brown declared in the clip. ‘Leggings are for the gym.’
‘We are wearing flare leggings, aka yoga pants, for us millennials. We are wearing them to run errands, and maybe to the gym as well? I don’t know, you can’t trust me, you know this.’
This past October, another millennial who goes by the username Style Crusader took to TikTok to ask how we are styling leggings for the fall.
‘Are we doing a no-show sock, or are we doing a chunky white sock pulled over the legging?’ she asked.
But in the comments section, instead of getting advice about her socks, she was met with some disdain for her regular old leggings.
‘We’re doing flared leggings,’ one user declared.
Another agreed, ‘Moving into a wider leg pant to replace the legging.’
‘I don’t think we are allowed to wear leggings anymore,’ a TikTok user joked.

Just a millennial trying to figure it out. 🙃 #leggings #leggingsoutfit #fallstyle
‘Flare leggings fixes the sock problem and looks more flattering imo,’ one more seconded.
Last Spring, Liz Teich, a New York City-based stylist, also showed how to upgrade your ‘millennial’ outfit by swapping regular leggings for a pair of flared ones.
The video was a part of her ‘millennial outfit makeover’ series.
In the clip, she took the outfit from hot to not by replacing a pair of leggings for ones with a flare, a tee shirt with a relaxed button-down, and a puffer jacket for an ‘elevated’ wool coat.
Of course, however, this ‘flared legging’ trend isn’t new to many.
In the early 2000s, flared leggings were instead called yoga pants, and it was a wildly popular trend.
At the time, yoga pants were sold everywhere, from places like Victoria’s Secret to Target to department stores and beyond.
It’s unclear exactly how and why Gen Z decided to rebrand them to ‘flared leggings,’ but they’ve definitely given the age-old trend a second wind.
Another TikTok user, Liz Teich, showed how millennials can upgrade their outfits to become more stylist, which included swapping regular leggings for flared ones
Next time you put on leggings, ask yourself, can I step this up? 😉 There’s nothing *wrong* with the ❌ side, but if you’re not wearing leggings to the gym/for a walk/for a grocery store run, maybe save this one to remember to give your legging look an upgrade!😏 #styletips #millennialsoftiktok #fashionforyou #momiform #leggings
Content creator Jenna Barclay even poked fun at the resurgence of the trend in a video over the summer.
Barclay often makes videos that portray nostalgic scenarios and style trends from the early 2000’s.
In the clip, she portrayed a scene where the ‘2023 flared legging girl’ meets the ‘2009 yoga pants girl.’
The 2023 flared leggings girl is wearing, of course, a pair of flared leggings paired with a black crop-top sports bra, and is holding a green juice and a yoga mat.
On the other hand, the 2009 yoga pant girl is also in a pair of ‘flared leggings,’ a Victoria’s Secret PINK tank top, and has a Walkman on her arm.

‘I like your pants,’ the 2023 girl says to the 2009 version of herself.
‘My yoga pants? Thanks!’ the 2009 character exclaims, as she shows of the purple pattern waistband on them.
‘These are my favorites because they have the rhinestones on the waistband,’ she continues, to which the 2023 girl looks absolutely horrified.
‘I like your yoga pants, too,’ the 2009 girl says.
‘Oh, no, these are flared leggings,’ she replies.
The two then go back and forth with each other over what the style of pants are actually called — ending in a serious confusion.
