The 80th Golden Globes Award Ceremony is set to take place in the early hours of January 11 in the UK.
The ceremony will return to screens after taking a break in 2021 after it was hit by accusations that the organisers, the Hollywood Foreign Press, had acted unethically and had failed to increase diversity among their members.
However, the awards still took place behind closed doors and the results were announced on social media.
As the award show prepares to make its TV return, we’re taking a look back at some of its most iconic moments…
Beyoncé turns up late
Beyoncé snagged herself a nomination in 2020 for the original song she wrote for The Lion King, Spirit, in the Best Original Song for a Motion Picture category.
But despite the nom, the singer decided she couldn’t make the start of the show and not-so-subtly snuck in whilst the awards were already underway.
She didn’t win, but she did make an impression.
Michelle Williams uses speech to stand up for abortion rights
Michelle Williams won Best Actress at the Golden Globes in 2020, and didn’t waste her any time making her acceptance speech memorable.
The star said: “I wouldn't have been able to do this without employing a woman's right to choose.
"To choose when to have my children and with whom.”
Seth Meyers talks about 'Hollywood predators'
Seth Meyers wasn’t pulling any punches in 2018 when he brought up Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood producer who kicked off the #MeToo movement.
Calling him “crazy,” the comedian joked that Harvey would one day be the “first person ever booed during the In Memoriam section of the awards show.
He also referenced Kevin Spacey, who has faced allegations of sexual assault and was removed from his leading role on hit Netflix show House of Cards in 2017.
Elizabeth Taylor loses track of how the awards work
In 2001, Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor was tasked with presenting the Golden Globe for the Best Drama Picture.
But the actress couldn’t keep track of the order of things and tried to open the all important envelope without reading the names of the nominees first.
Luckily, she was joined on stage by Dick Clark who was quick to remind her how it works.
2008’s show gets canned
The Golden Globes found itself hit by the effects of an industry wide writers strike after members of the screen actors guild, which includes plenty of big stars, pledged not to cross a picket of striking workers outside the event.
Rather than risk an embarrassing turnout, the organisers opted to cancel the Globes entirely.
Jack Nicholson admits to taking valium
Hollywood royalty Jack Nicholson raised a few eyebrows at the awards in 2003 when he won the Globe for best actor for About Schmidt.
After using most of his speech to poke fun at the film itself and his co-stars, Jack later confessed that he had been on valium during the ceremony.
Renée Zellweger vanishes at the crucial moment
Perhaps Renée Zellweger wasn’t expecting to win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a musical or comedy in 2001, as when her name was called she was nowhere to be found.
Hugh Grant announced that the actress had won for her part in Nurse Betty, but found himself having to accept the award in her stead when she went MIA.
Eventually the actress hurriedly rushed on stage and explained that she had taken a very ill-timed bathroom break.
Emma Stone apologises to Sandra Oh
When 2019’s host Sandra Oh made a joke about Emma Stone’s role in Aloha, a film that was supposed to be about a half Chinese half Hawaiian woman but cast caucasian Emma Stone, the actress couldn’t help but respond.
From the audience, a sheepish Emma shouted “I’m sorry,”, leaving the rest of the audience stunned.
Jodie Foster puts herself out there
Jodie Foster cinched the Globes’ lifetime achievement award during the 2013 ceremony – and used her acceptance speech to give viewers a little more insight into her private life.
The actress said, “I guess I have a sudden urge to say something that I’ve never really been able to air in public.”
Her big announcement? “I am single,” Jodie clarified.
Brad Pitt gives a shout out to diarrhoea medicine
Brad Pitt stripped back some of the glamour of the awards when he thanked the makers of diarrhoea medication Kaopectate in 1996.
The actor explained that they had done a “great service for their fellow man.”
Brad was accepting the award for best supporting actor for his role in 12 Monkeys.
2016’s exhausted censor
Whoever had to bleep the awards in 2016 probably deserves a promotion.
The show was beleaguered with foul language that broadcaster NBC struggled to stay on top of.
First, Amy Schumer dropped the C bomb whilst bantering with Jennifer Lawrence, followed by Ricky Gervais asking Mel Gibson about his expletive filled rant and Jonah Hill taking to the stage to perform a comedy skit littered with foul language.
Jacqueline Bisset goes rogue in her acceptance speech
Accepting the award for supporting actress in a miniseries in 2014 for Dancing on the Edge, Jacqueline Bisset left fans scratching their heads with a largely nonsensical speech.
Ignoring the cutoff music, she offered some odd advice to fans, saying, “if you want to look good, you’ve got to forgive everybody… it’s the best beauty treatment.”
Ricky Gervais’ risque hosting speeches
Controversial comedian Ricky Gervais has hosted the Golden Globes five times, despite regularly attacking celebs in attendance and even the show’s organisers in his opening speeches.
He most recently got the gig in 2020 and, during a monologue that had some audience members visibly cringing, branded the Hollywood Foreign Press “very racist,” and insinuated that the actors were “friends,” with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Gervais also took aim at political speeches and joked that none of the nominees should be lecturing the public.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler take a dig at George Clooney
Tina and Amy took aim at several of the male attendees when they hosted the 2014 Golden Globes.
Pointing out George Clooney’s penchant for dating younger women, they joked that “George Clooney would rather float away in space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.
Tina Fey takes aim at internet trolls
Taking aim at Clooney isn’t the only memorable Golden Globes moment for Tina Fey, who made a joke at her own expense in 2009.
Assuring the audience that she wasn’t too big for her boots, the comedian joked that if she ever needed to be brought back down to earth all she needed to do was look at the reception she was getting online.
Jeremy Renner can’t keep his eyes off J Lo
Jeremy Renner joined musical legend J Lo during the 2015 ceremony to present the award for the best drama miniseries, but found that he was becoming a little distracted whilst on stage!
Renner couldn’t help put catch a glimpse of J Lo’s plunging neckline and joked, “you’ve got the globes too.”
Luckily, J Lo took it in good spirits!
Bette Midler makes a cheeky joke
It might be a bit of a surprise that so few celebs have taken the opportunity to make a naughty “globes,” joke whilst accepting their awards.
Bette Midler made use of her speech in 1980, however, to joke that “I’ll show you a pair of golden globes,” before insisting that she “didn’t mean it.”
She also swore that she would stop swearing on stage, earning raucous laughter from the audience.
