‘I didn’t think you could get pregnant while expecting — then I had triplets’

A woman has urged expecting parents to "be careful" as she reveals she got pregnant twice in one week, resulting in triplets.

When Dee Michelle, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, found out she was pregnant in 2020, she didn't think it was possible to get pregnant again at the same time so thought there'd be nothing wrong with having a "careless" night of passion with her fiancé Antonio Livingston.

But the couple got the shock of their lives when they soon discovered one baby had become three. While it might seem outlandish, it can really happen.

It's known as superfetation pregnancy, a rare phenomenon that sees a second fertilised egg implanting in a uterus already containing a pregnancy, resulting in getting pregnant while you're already pregnant. Dee took to her TikTok, @deeandtplusthree, to describe how her own superfetation pregnancy left her with triplets.

She explained: "Basically what happened was we were planning for a baby and I got pregnant I had an ultrasound there was one baby. So I found out I was pregnant I figured you know I can't get pregnant again it's fine if we continue to be careless, I literally said that!

"A week later I went to the ER because I was in so much pain I thought I was having a miscarriage but I come to find out I was in so much pain because my uterus was growing so fast because there were two more babies." Dee said twins or triplets don't run in either her or her fiance's family.

She added: "It happened all within like a week's span, so yeah it's very possible. I tell people all the time now to just be careful because if it happened to me, it can happen to anybody."

In another video going into more detail on the timeline of events during her pregnancy, she revealed her medical history likely played an important role. "I naturally get my period two to three times every single month, I've been this way since I was a teenager I got on birth control for a few years and I was getting it once a month when I was on birth control. After I got off it went back to two to three times," she said.

Dee explained how she had her period and then "did the do" with her fiance. A few days after finding out about the first pregnancy, she revealed she got another period that lasted a few days. She added: "We did have sex again after that and like I said in the previous video we were being careless because I didn't think I could get pregnant again."

When she found out she was pregnant with three babies, Dee learnt she'd ovulated twice, one egg for the first pregnancy, and one egg for the second at a different time — which became twins. Although she was technically pregnant with twins and one baby, Dee still considers her daughters to be triplets.

She explained: "Doctors and stuff don't really count the conception time it's all about the time they were born. Technically I have a singleton and twins but in reality, it's triplets if that makes sense, but the one is older than the other two by a week."

Despite being conceived a week apart the babies were all born on the same day. "The pregnancy itself was very good, I had a good pregnancy everything was fine the babies are very healthy even still to this day," Dee said.

While the babies were "so unexpected" Dee says they're "the best thing that has ever happened" to her. But the mum, who has since welcomed a son too, still issued a warning to other parents. "By the way y'all, if this happened to be it can happen to you too so wrap it up and take your birth control," she said.
