I finally divorced my abusive husband after you helped me find the courage to leave | The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: EVEN though I’d had enough of my abusive husband, after decades of suffering I still didn’t have the courage to leave him.

But my children had finally left home and I felt I no longer had any excuses. I’m 52 and he is 55.

Throughout our marriage, he put me down, gaslit me and flew into vicious rages at any provocation.

I asked him to go to couples therapy, but he refused.

When I wrote to you, it was to ask for your Standing Up For Yourself support pack.

However, you helped so much more. You told me I was not the coward I thought myself to be, and you encouraged me to continue to take small steps.

You also sent me your Abusive Partner leaflet, which contained helpful tips and details of support organisations.

Later, you even followed up to see how I was.

I’m pleased to say that thanks to the information you provided, I found local support, which helped me to stand up to my husband.

And eventually, I got the strength to leave him.

I’m now divorced from him and so much happier.

DEIDRE SAYS:  I am so happy I was able to help.

But you did all the hard work to turn your life around.
