The cost-of-living crisis has hit many households hard – but one man has come up with a clever hack to save on buying pricey laundry detergents.

Dan, believed to be from Bognor Regis, known by his handle @fattdann on TikTok, often posts videos lifting weights at the gym as well money-saving life hacks – but this time he welcomed fans to ‘Fattdann’s council tips’.

He told his 200,000 followers: ‘If you’ve never used shampoo to wash your clothes, you ain’t even council!’ while pointing the hair products towards the camera.

Dan showed viewers two bottles: a pink one for shampoo and white one for conditioner – both by the budget-friendly Alberto Balsam brand which is dotted around corner shops nationwide.

The shampoo and conditioner tpyicall cost £1 per bottle compared to £10 you could end up paying for a pack of detergent pods and a bottle of fabric conditioner.

The frugal content creator explained: ‘ If you’ve run out of washing powder and stuff like that, Alberto [Balsam] is the best for it!’

Opening up the drawer of his washing machine, Dan poured a liberal helping of each substance into separate compartments – one to serve as detergent and the other as fabric conditioner.

Dan set his wash for an hour-long cycle and turned the knob to 30 degrees, while  acknowledging that there would be people who disagree with his unconventional life hack.

‘Now, some people might say this ain’t gonna work, your clothes smell lovely, but when it’s raining and you’re out and about, they do tend to froth out a little bit! So watch out for that’, he warned.

The TikToker said he couldn’t even imagine resorting back to the traditional way of doing a wash because ‘the cost-of-living crisis has gone through the f***ing roof’.

Finishing the video, he urged his followers to ‘get their Albertos on’, stressing that they’re only £1 a bottle and that you can get about 25 washes out of a bottle of shampoo and 10 out of the conditioner.

Dan warned followers not to forget to bring your clothes in from the washing line if there’s chance of a storm – unless you fancy a lathery t-shirt.

This simple life hack comes just after one thrifty mother showed how she makes her own natural laundry detergent using conkers – which saves money and doesn’t irritate her son’s eczema.

Kara Woodhouse, 29, from Cambridge, shared the tip on social media and says that anyone with access to a horse chestnut tree can save money on their washing powder.

The mum-of-two collects the conkers from September to December, which she uses to make laundry detergent throughout the year.

Kara claims she would normally spend approximately £30 every two weeks on washing products which means she saves up to £60 a month.

A video shows Kara and her children Loui, four, and Connie, three, all getting involved in the production of the washing powder.
