A woman has sparked a discussion after she said she is ‘struggling’ with her daughter’s name because she fears the youngster might get ‘bullied.’
Taking to UK parenting platform Mumsnet, the anonymous woman explained that she has been ‘triggered by a thread I read on’ the website saying her baby’s name Violet is similar to ‘violent or vile.’
She went onto explain that she is now worried that her daughter might get ‘bullied in school’ over her name.
Many rushed to the comments to reassure the women saying the name Violet is beautiful, however others did admit that some may get the pronunciation wrong.
The mother wrote: ‘I had a DD (dear daughter) recently and called her Violet. I have struggled since with the name – I like it myself but I worry my lovely DD will be bullied because of a name I gave her – I think this was triggered by a thread I read on Mumsnet saying it’s like violent/vile.

‘I’m tying myself in knots worrying I’ve ruined her life and it’ll be all my fault. I’m also in Northern Ireland and the name isn’t as popular here as the UK and I worry about regional pronunciation.
‘If you have a Violet in their teens / are an adult Violet have you been name called or bullied because of your name?’
Many women rushed to the comments to say they thought the name was ‘a lovely name.’

‘Locally you’ll notice that some people will drop the o so they pronounce it like Vilet but that tends to be older people. Enjoy your baby and the name, it’s lovely.’

One person wrote: ‘I wanted to name our youngest Violet, and then a colleague mentioned it sounded like Violent and I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I regret not using it now, it’s a beautiful name!
Another wrote: ‘It’s a cute name but yeah, people can be really s*** at accurately reading names, especially if they look at first glance like a different word.
‘E.g. My brother’s name is Harvir and the number of people who glance briefly, then confidently state ‘Xavier!’ is remarkable. Especially as it’s pronounced as it’s written!
‘So she will definitely get people who are c*** at reading/attention to detail saying ‘violent’ as she grows, but that’s no reason not to have it as a name. It’s perfectly nice.’
While another said: ‘My great grandmother was violet. Apparently she was violent and was nicknamed such.

‘However the name is absolutely beautiful don’t second guess yourself – there are so many odd names out there, violet isn’t one of them imo.’
The original poster later admitted she might be suffering with a little bit of anxiety but thanked the other mothers for their thoughts on the name.
She wrote: ‘Thanks everyone for your lovely messages. It means a lot to see others don’t make the same associations.
‘I do think those who have mentioned anxiety may be correct. I was very happy with the name initially then the overthinking crept in and I’ve been looking for/watching movies where people are called Violet to see if it’s ok in the movie or what her peers might think when they meet her / have watched these shows. I do love the name and so does my husband. I just worry.
‘Nickname wise it’ll probably be V as my DH already calls his brother and me by our initials even though we have normal names where the initial wouldn’t be a nickname.’
