Meghan Markle, 41, and Prince Harry, 38, were recently in New York to receive an award at the Ripple of Hope Awards. The royal couple later chose a photograph from this event to be their official Christmas card.
In contrast, Kate Middleton and Prince William, both 40, had a professionally taken photograph to be their official Christmas card picture.
The Prince and Princess of Wales posed alongside their three children, Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four, in Norfolk where they have a residence called Anmer Hall.
Body language and behavioural expert Darren Stanton compared the two royal families’ Christmas cards for Express.co.uk.
Darren Stanton is a former police officer with the Derbyshire police with a degree in psychology, who used his expertise to uncover the truth when interviewing hundreds of suspects.
He said that William and Kate showed their “strength” as a family through their photo while Harry and Meghan went for a more “professional” look.
Mr Stanton, speaking on behalf of Slingo, compared the photos shared by the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, noting they are “quite different” in tone.
This year saw Harry and Meghan deciding not to use a family snap, instead posing as a couple in a photo Mr Stanton has described as “corporate”.
Mr Stanton said: “Prince William and Kate are showing genuine smiles and enjoying a family moment while dressed casually in the photo they’ve selected for their Christmas card.
“As they hold hands with the children they are not pushing any agenda, merely showing themselves in a very natural setting as they match and mirror each other in their posture.
“They seem to be genuinely enjoying each other’s company and are keen to share this familial joy through their Christmas message.
“By holding hands it could also be said they are putting on a united front to show the strength they feel as a family.”
However, according to this expert, Harry and Meghan’s Christmas card is quite “different”.
He explained: “Harry and Meghan, however, have chosen to go in quite a different direction with their choice.
“They went along with a different theme which communicates their brand as a couple as opposed to a family snap.
“It is more so a look at their professional lives rather than seeing them in a domestic setting alongside their two children as they appear smartly dressed at an event.
“They have decided to be quite corporate in the Christmas cards they have sent out as it has more of a sense of formality about it over being personal.”
However, Harry and Meghan still look “happy” according to the body language expert.
Mr Stanton noted: “Despite this, they both look happy and in sync with each other as they smile.
“While it is a more formal photo than they’ve used in years gone by, it does look like a natural moment where they have been caught looking organically happy in each other’s company.
“There is no right or wrong choice, of course, it just depends on what message each person wants to convey.”
