With hairstylists and colourists instantly available to Kim Kardashian with just a click of her perfectly manicured fingers, we’re going to assume then that the star’s latest hair look is the result of her wanting to revive a trend rather than a result of her missing a trip to the hair salon.
In new snaps taken in, what looks like, a parking lot (they’re a lot more glam than we make them sound), Kim poses in head-to-toe Balenciaga – no change there, then. The outfit is certainly eye catching, but the first thing we spotted was Kim’s hair. The mum-of-four has been favouring a platinum blonde shade for months now, but in these snaps it looks like Kim is testing out a new trend: a contrasting root.
We haven’t really seen the trend since the late 90s supermodel grunge era, when an exposed root was all the rage. These days, overgrown roots are something blondes mostly dread. In true Kim style, the star is making the dark shade of her natural hair look good against the white blonde base of her hair, making us wonder: will this be the next big hair trend?
We’re not convinced about that, but one thing we do know for sure is that platinum blonde is a top trend for A/W 2022. It was already a big trend for summer and now HBO’s Game of Thrones sequel, House of the Dragon, has caused the colour to surge in Google searches by 185% – and that’s just after the first episode.
But should fantasy hair actually be attempted in real life? To find out, we asked Percy & Reed’s creative stylist Emma Vickery (appointmentshere) who just happens to be a platinum bombshell herself.
Her answer? Approach it like you would a dragon – with extreme caution. “I wouldn’t have this hair colour if I wasn’t a hairdresser,” Emma admits. “It is extremely high maintenance.”
So, how easy is it to go Targaryen blonde? Take a wild guess. “It’s not something that everyone can do,” says Emma. “Technically it might be possible but in reality it would take a lot of work and upkeep.”
You don’t need to be a colour chemist to realise that the darker your hair, the longer your journey. “If you have a dark base and your hair has been previously coloured, it would take months and months of coming into the salon every 6-8 weeks, and there would be a lot of sacrifices along the way,” cautions Emma.
We might leave GoT blonde to Kim, then!
