High street video game retailer Game is shutting another of its 240 branches in the coming days.

Game, which was bought out by former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley in 2019, is closing the doors to its Commercial Street, Newport branch, in Wales, on October 18.

However, the store will be relocating to inside Sports Direct – coincidentally on Commercial Street and also owned by Ashley – on October 20.

This comes as a number of Game stores have moved from their own premises to inside House of Fraser or Sports Direct – all part of Frasers Group.

In June, the Braehead branch of Game in Scotland relocated to a nearby Sports Direct.

There are still over 240 individual Game stores located in the UK, and shoppers can find the closest by using their nationwide store locator on their website.

Sports Direct itself has relocated two of its stores this autumn, in Norwich and Newcastle, to larger sites closer to other retailers and Frasers Group brands.

House of Fraser has shut four locations this year – High Wycombe, Solihull, Guildford and Cardiff – while its Birmingham store was turned into an outlet.

The Frasers Group bought House of Fraser out of administration in 2019.

But fellow high street retailers are also closing their stores this autumn, with Health and Beauty store Boots shutting down a total of six locations in October – with two in Wakefield alone.

Frozen supermarket chain Iceland has closed 15 premises so far this year, and has plans to shut their Huddersfield location on October 28.
