Animal lovers have been left in tears, after a dog was found abandoned in the street with a bag of her belongings – and a heartbreaking note from the owner who was forced to give her up.

Baby Girl was discovered in Green Bay, Wisconsin, looking glum and confused whilst bound to a fire hydrant.

When the Wisconsin Humane Society rescued Baby Girl, there was a bag of her favourite belongings – along with a letter from her former owner.

Although the rescuers did not repeat what the letter said verbatim, they did reveal the owner abandoned the dog in an ‘act of desperation’, while battling homelessness and going through cancer.

The rescuers thanked the owner, in a heartbreaking open letter, that has left people teary-eyed.

The gut-wrenching letter reads: ‘We see your love in the way you secured her leash so she wouldn’t get hit by a car.

‘We see your love in the way you placed her in the middle of a neighbourhood where she’d be quickly found.

‘We see your love in how happy and healthy Baby Girl looks. And we see your love in the note you left, pleading for someone to help her when you no longer could.’

The team who take on anonymously surrendered dogs continued to express their gratitude to the owner: ‘We see that you did what you thought was best for your beloved pup and we are grateful for your compassion,’

Later, Baby Girl’s owner anonymously shared with CNN, why she had no choice but to give up her beloved pet as she was homeless and undergoing chemotherapy.

The unidentified woman said she had called seven places to see if they would take the 6-year-old – but all replied with a resounding no.

Left with no other option, the owner tied the dog to the hydrant and hid down the road to ensure the dog was safe.

It was later revealed that the adorable dog’s former owner was undergoing chemotherapy treatment and living on the streets. The former owner described it as the ‘hardest thing’ she has ever done, but she is confident the dog will ‘be in a better place’

The torn owner told CNN: ‘It was the worst, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life

‘When I put her on the hydrant, I just saw her face that she was like, “Mom, what, what, what’s going on here?”.

‘She was my life, but I know she’s going to be in a better place.’

As per routine, the Humane Society took Baby Girl for a routine check up after collecting her from hydrant.

During the appointment, it was spotted Baby girl had diabetes mellitus, also referred to as canine diabetes.

As a result of health problems, which can cause high blood sugar levels, the adorable dog requires at-home insulin injections, daily glucose monitoring and a restricted diet.

This disease could have likely been costly for the dog’s owner, who was already living on the streets, according to a member of the Wisconsin Humane Society.

They elaborated that keeping on top of the pet’s diabetes, medical supplies and vet appointments could have cost ‘hundreds of dollars a month.’

It was also discovered  Baby Girl had canine diabetes which would have been hundreds of dollars a month. The former owner explained in her letter was struggling to balance her own and the dog’s costly healthcare

People flocked to the comments with sympathy for the former dog owner and the Baby Girl, sharing their thoughts and compassion

People flocked to the comments with empathy for the abandoned pet and their owner, with one woman stating: ‘How sad, but it is wonderful of you to write such a  compassionate open letter to her past owner.’

Another added: ‘Sobbing watching this. What a heart she has for Baby Girl. Hardest decision she made.’

A woman emotionally commented: ‘This story brought tears to my face not only for the Baby Girl but also for the previous owner. What a heart ache it was for both of them.’

While one person ‘commended’ the former owner, writing: ‘I know it was extremely difficult for you to tie Baby Girl to the fire hydrant, but you kept watch to make sure she was safe.

‘Wishing you the best and a speedy recovery during your chemo treatments.’

One person empathised: ‘It’s like giving up a child! Heartbreaking!’

However, the tale is not all upsetting, as Baby Girl eventually found her forever home only two weeks after being left on the side of the road, Daily Paws reports.
