Makeup artist’s top 4 tips if you have mature, hooded eyelids

If you have hooded eyes, the skin folds down from the brow bone, creating the appearance of a smaller eyelid.

While some people are genetically predisposed to have this eye shape, for others, it can develop with age.

“Around 80 percent of people I work with struggle with their eye makeup,” said Amanda.

Having applied makeup on the likes of fashion designer Collette Dinnigan, 58, Amanda knows how to “make your peepers shine”.

Tip one

“Stop putting shimmery shadows or highlighters under your brow bone,” said Amanda.

Applying shimmer in the brow bone area is only going to emphasise that heavy-ish fold of skin sitting under the brow bone.

“Instead, pop that shimmery shadow on the inner corners of your eyes for extra sparkle,” added Amanda.

Tip two

As for eyeshadow, Amanda is a big fan of long-wear cream eyeshadow sticks.

Described as “fool-proof”, this type of eyeshadow will not sit in the crinkles of your eyelids.

“Plus, they don’t transfer and are dead-easy to apply,” said Amanda. “Simply choose an eyeshadow crayon, twist it up and colour in your eyelid.”

Tip three

Create a false socket, advised Amanda, who said women with hooded eyes should not blend a dark shadow into the crease of their eyes.

The eyelid skin will only droop over the crease anyway, so it’s essentially pointless.

You can create a false socket by applying darker eyeshadow, while looking ahead, at where you would want the crease to be.

Amanda added: “Take a bit of matte bronzer on a pencil-shaped eyeshadow brush and run it under your lower lash line, then kick it out a little and upwards at the end. This will give the illusion of more lifted-looking eyes and create balance.”

Tip four

Mascara is must-have to make your eyes stand out in the best possible way.

Although, if you suffer from mascara transferring onto your eyelids, Amanda suggests opting for a smudge-proof version like Mirenesse Secret Weapon Mascara.
