Man accused of stealing girlfriend's moment after proposing at graduation

A man has divided Twitter by proposing to his partner in the middle of her graduation ceremony.

Big public proposals are divisive at the best of times, but this one has really drawn ire.

A viral video of a man popping the question shows a woman standing in front of an audience as she waits to graduate.

After her name is called, she walks over to shake hands with the university official, before her partner pops into the shot and gets down on one knee in front of her.

The woman looks shocked as she takes a couple steps back, and the man, who’s wearing robes that suggest he graduated that day too, waves to the crowd after everyone starts to clap.

You can’t hear what was said between the two, but it looks like she says yes because the man reaches for her hand and places the ring on her finger while she smiles.

They share a somewhat awkward hug before embracing another university official who seems to know them both.

The clip was shared on the Newcastle University Twitter account with the caption: ‘There’s more than one way to make your day in King’s Hall memorable.’

While some think the proposal was cute, others have taken to the comments to accuse the man of being ‘selfish’, ‘self-centred’, and of stealing his partner’s moment.

‘This is absolutely awful’, wrote one commenter.

‘I’d rather have my graduation ceremony interrupted by Just Stop Oil tbh,’ said another.

‘Let her have her moment,’ somebody else wrote. ‘This is awful.’

But there are also some who think the graduation proposal was a nice gesture.

‘I think this was super sweet and romantic,’ reads one comment. ‘What a really special day to remember for them.’

‘This might be one of the most uplifting things I’ve seen on Twitter for quite some time,’ reads another.

‘I was in the room for this,’ someone else said. ‘What an amazing moment!’
