Departing from a 600-year long tradition, it was recently revealed thatCamilla, Queen Consort would not have any ladies-in-waitingbut would instead have a series of six ‘Queen’s Companions’.
As part of the plans, the role of the Queen’s Companion’s will be undertaken by some of Camilla’s closest confidantes, and the women will be there to support Camilla, 75, while attending charity events, formal ceremonies and state visits.
Like the previous ladies-in-waiting, a Palace source said that they will receive a nominal fee to cover their expenses, with another source telling theSunday Times that they would be on hand to give the Queen Consort “support and company”.
So, who are the new companions? Let’s take a peek…
Sarah Troughton
69 year old Sarah Troughton is the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire and is the first woman to have held the position. As part of her role, she helps oversee arrangements regarding royal visits to the county.
As the second cousin of King Charles, Sarah was previously a lady-in-waiting for the Duchess of Kent, so has experience when it comes to supporting members of the royal family.
Lady Katherine Brooke
Lady Katherine Brooke is a close friend of Camilla’s and her mother has served in the royal household, too.
Her mother Lady Susan Hussey was Queen Elizabeth II’s lady-in-waiting for over 60 years, though recently stepped back aftera prominent black advocate for survivors of domestic abuse revealed that she was repeatedly asked by a member of the Buckingham Palace household where she “really came from”.
Lady Susan is also Prince William’s godmother.
Fiona Marchioness of Lansdowne
Fiona Marchioness of Lansdowne is an interior designer, and has owned the Fiona Shelburne studio for over 30 years.
Alongside her husband Charles, the 9th Marquess of Lansdowne, she lives at Bowood House in Wiltshire and recently opened up about their life on the 2,000 acre ground in an interview withThe English Home magazine.
“Being open to the public is lovely because you feel you are sharing something very beautiful with lots of people,” she said. “We get wonderful letters and that makes it all worthwhile.”
Lady Sarah Keswick
Lady Sarah Keswick and her husband Sir John Chippendale Lindley Keswick are both close friends of Camilla and King Charles.
Throughout the years, Lady Sarah has been spotted at a variety of events with Camilla and the pair showed off their love for sport as they attended Wimbledon together in 2011.
Lady Sarah is the daughter of the 16th Earl of Dalhousie Simon Ramsay, who was a Conservative MP between 1945 and 1950.
Jane von Westenholz
Jane von Westenholz is married to former Olympic skier Baron Piers von Westenholz and their daughter Violet iswidely believed to be the person who introduced Prince Harry to Meghan Markle back in 2016.
Carlyn Chisholm
Before becoming a Queen’s Companion, Baroness Carlyn Chisholm of Owlpen served as a Conservative life peer in the House of Lords, though resigned the Tory whip in order to receive the role.
The 70 year old first served in the House of Lords in 2014, though prior to entering politics she was a nurse.
