Meg Bellamy who plays Kate Middleton in The Crown reveals her neighbour convinced her to audition while she was working as a brick at Legoland and insists she STILL doesn’t think she looks like the royal

Meg Bellamy has revealed her neighbour convinced her to audition for The Crown and insists she still doesn’t think she resembles Kate Middleton.

The actress, 20, will portray the Princess of Wales in the final season of the hit Netflix show, which debuts on the streaming platform on 16 November.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the star, who grew up in Berkshire, explained how she wasn’t signed with an agent when Netflix put a call-out for young actresses on social media in April 2022.

At the time, Meg was working as a red brick at Legoland Windsor – which she described as ‘the best job ever’.

She said: ‘In April last year, the opportunity [for The Crown] popped up on my Twitter, and at the same time my neighbour sent it to me and told me that I should go for it.’

Although Meg’s neighbour was adamant that she looked just like the Princess of Wales, the actress said she had never been compared to Kate before.

She added: ‘I never got that and I still think maybe I don’t, but with the amazing hair and make-up teams and the costume department, once everything’s put together, you have to have an essence.’ 

Opening up about the audition process, Meg revealed that she had to tell producers her height to begin with.

Alongside this, the star said the casting team also asked her to reveal a fun fact about themselves – with Meg opting to tell them about her job at the popular theme park. 

During the process, Meg said she tried to ‘unleash her inner make-up artist’ and carefully studied Netflix’s photo of Kate to figure out how the future Princess had applied her bronzer. 

She continued: ‘With every audition, I just watched and watched [Kate]. Reading about her and listening to her was so important both before and during.’ 

Although the costume department had pictures of the Princess of Wales to base Meg’s wardrobe on, the actress highlighted how there are no videos of the royal speaking as a student – meaning some of her mannerisms where left to Meg’s interpretation. 

What’s more, the star also reflected on the ‘intense’ period of filming at St Andrews in Scotland earlier this year.

Meg and her co-star Ed McVey (who has been cast as Prince William) were pictured filming scenes on the historic campus, which dates back to the 15th century. 

‘It’s a small place,’ Meg said. ‘And we were the talk of the town.’ 

One viral clip, which was uploaded by current students to TikTok, shows Meg holding hands with model and actor Oli Green, who appears to have been cast as one of Kate’s former flames. 

The star was also seen filming scenes waitressing at an Italian restaurant and jogging around the local area. 

Although Meg didn’t reveal if she had watched the series in its entirety, the star did praise the first season of The Crown – labelling Claire Foy and Matt Smith ‘absolutely magnificent’. 

Before being cast in the show, Meg said she ‘didn’t have strong feelings’ about the Royal Family – but recalled being ‘in awe’ of Kate Middleton while watching her wedding to Prince William in 2011. 

While Meg has no official acting credits to her name, Ed has significantly more experience; he graduated from Drama Centre London in 2021 and was an understudy in the play Camp Siegfried, which was shown at London’s Old Vic.

Meg has never acted professionally before and applied for the role after earning an A* for drama in her A-levels at St Crispin’s School in Wokingham, Berkshire.

Last month, Netflix released a first look trailer for season six of The Crown – which recreated poignant moments from Princess Diana’s final days, including her romance with Dodi.

The final instalment of the royal drama will air in two parts, with the first half of the series dropping on Netflix on November 16, and the second on December 14.

And, according to the snaps released by the streaming giant, fans will see some historic moments recreated on screen – including Princess Diana’s final days before she died in a car crash in Paris in August 1997.

A statement by the streaming giant about the last season revealed that the season cover the time period around the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, as well as covering the meeting of Prince William and Kate Middleton in the early 2000s.

It says: ‘A relationship blossoms between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences.

‘Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion.

‘As she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairytale in William and Kate.’
