Residents of one of the most beautiful villages in the UK are fed up with tourists bringing booze-fuelled rows and drugs at night.

Bowness-on-Windermere is a quaint village on the picturesque shore of Lake Windermere in the Lake District.

While it's the sort of place you would typically associate with long romantic weekends away or wholesome family outings, Bowness is battling an uptick in anti-social behaviour.

Parish councillor Christine Cook, 67, told The Sun: "It's like a mini-Blackpool these days with the hen and stag dos.

"I saw a group of girls all dressed up in black dresses and purple wigs recently – and then you get them all dressed up in bride and fairy costumes. It looks funny in the early evening but it turns into something else at night."

The Sun reports that Manchester-based drug dealers travel to Bowness to serve the stag and hen parties. And with groups of people partying on alcohol and drugs comes the fighting.

Former Bowness mayor Adrian Legge told the publication: "You get rival stag dos clashing at night." Recently, a bloke in a Batman costume was apparently seen fighting in the street.

And it isn't just stag and hen parties causing issues. Locals have reportedly complained of bags of dog poo left hanging from trees and soiled nappies left on the beach.

Legge added: "We love visitors but we have called on the council time and time again to get more bins and to stop handing out alcohol licences. We need better infrastructure for the amount of people who come to visit us."

A Westmorland and Furness Council spokesperson said the council works hard to "balance welcoming visitors safely and sustainably with the wellbeing of residents".

They added: "When visitor numbers increased after the first Covid lockdown we increased the frequency of litter bin emptying in tourist hotspots to up to six times daily, as well as installing additional litter bins in busy areas.

"We encourage visitors to take personal responsibility and behave with respect towards local communities."
