Struggling households could be owed a lot of money without realising.

By August it might become a lot harder to check if you can claim anything.

The cash comes from so-called "dormant assets" which could include money in bank accounts that have been untouched.

It has been estimated there is over £50billion of cash it out there waiting to be found.

Banks, building societies and other financial companies must try to contact the account holders of any dormant assets.

But the money could go to the government to be distributed for good causes if they're unable to track the owners down.

The Dormant Assets Scheme was recently expanded to include money in pensions, insurance products, investments and more.

However it's hard to track down any money that you may have locked away if you've lost the paperwork.

Experian can help people search for their forgotten cash.

You can create an online account and search for your lost money which costs just £25.

It's worth noting Experian is closing down the register on August 31, which will make it harder to find lost money.

There are other options to search for "forgotten cash" – some of which are free.

Age UK offers advice on how to track down lost money and you can use the government's pension tracing service online tool.

Alternatively you can contact Pension Tracing Service on 0800 731 0193 to find contact details for an employer or pension scheme.

To track down lost accounts, My Lost Account is a free service which helps you.

Also you can check out the MoneySavingExpert website on how to find lost or dormant bank accounts.
