Glam Girl Gabi is a hairstylist with over 17 years of experience and 200,000 subscribers on YouTube. She took to the platform to share how ladies over 50 can maintain a young-looking appearance.

Many mature women fear going grey and believe that it is a tell-tale sign of ageing, but hairstylist Gabi does not agree.

Rather, the expert actually encourages older women to “embrace” their silver strands on the grounds that natural-looking hair is young-looking hair.

The expert stated: “This is going to be seriously controversial and I am bracing myself for the comments because there are some people who think that going with your natural colour makes you look super old.

“I am not one of those people, I absolutely love natural grey hair.”

According to Gabi, naturally grey hair is “shiny” and “beautiful” – not to mention easier and cheaper to maintain than dyed hair.

Going grey for good means fewer trips to the salon for colour touch ups, which can be expensive and even damaging to your hair over time.

Gabi said: “In my opinion, having a huge regrowth line every two weeks doesn’t make you look any younger. Shiny, healthy hair makes you look younger.”

What’s more, forgoing hair dye and accepting your authentic hair can be an “incredibly liberating” experience as well as a “more flattering” result.

While it may surprise women who have been touching up their roots for years, grey hair can be “more flattering” because it is healthy and “healthy hair is the most flattering thing ever”.

For those keen to take the plunge and go grey for good, Glam Girl Gabi provided some essential tips.

She advised women to stock up on purple shampoo or a purple treatment mask to use a few times per week.

This is designed to get rid of any yellow pigment that may be “muddying up” your silver.

She explained that very light hair has a tendency to go yellow over time for a variety of reasons.

Minerals from the water, UV rays from the sun and product buildup all run the risk of yellowing virgin grey hair.

Because purple is a complementary tone to yellow on the colour wheel, it neutralises the tone and makes the hair “super icy and bright” instead – “it is beautiful”.

For some more grey hair tips, Express.co.uk spoke to Nicole Petty, hair expert from extensions brand Milk + Blush.

She exclusively told Express.co.uk that the secret to young-looking grey hair may be some touches of extra colour.

“Introducing highlights or lowlights can help grey hair appear more dimensional, shinier, and healthier,” she explained.

“Grey highlights can also be a great way to transition to grey hair without the harsh banding of allowing your roots to grow out or having to make the chop.

“If your hair is darker, opt for darker shades of salt and pepper or charcoal grey to complement and blend with your natural locks.

“Alternatively, natural blondes may opt for lighter, warmer shades. Combining blonde with grey is a fabulous way to embrace greys in a youthful way without washing you out.”
