Multi-millionaire beauty mogul shares secrets as she turns 50

Millionaire beauty mogul who looks two decades younger than she really is shares her anti-ageing secrets – and the diet tricks behind her radiant skin

  • Founder of The Beauty Chef Carla Oates swears by walking and wholefoods
  • She eats three veggie meals per week and looks after her skin inside and out

The founder of the multi-million-dollar beauty empire The Beauty Chef has shared her anti-ageing secrets after turning 50 this week – and the diet that keeps her looking as though she could be in her 20s.

Carla Oates, from Sydney, launched The Beauty Chef – which is a range of probiotic powders, products and elixirs – after realising that her eczema cleared when she ate certain foods and became worse when she enjoyed others.

When Carla’s own daughter developed eczema in 2009, she began to look at research examining the connection between certain types of bacteria and eczema allergies.

After putting her daughter on a ‘gut-healing’ diet that cut irritants like dairy, gluten, corn, and soy from her diet and replaced them with ‘probiotic-rich, lacto-fermented foods’, Carla founded her range in 2009.

These days, Carla practises what she preaches, eating a fibre-rich diet filled with wholefoods and plenty of vegetarian days.

She also looks after her skin on the inside and out via various supplements and products.

For me, my skincare routine and my inner beauty routine and health go hand in hand,’ Carla told FEMAIL.

‘Exercise, mindfulness and connection are all really important, as well as looking after your skin and gut microbiome.’

Carla’s diet is plant-filled and protein-rich; and she said she makes sure she has three vegetarian meals every single week as well as smoothies with prebiotics (pictured)

DIET

Carla’s diet is plant-filled and protein-rich; and she said she makes sure she has three vegetarian meals every single week.

‘I always start the day with Glow Inner Beauty Essential, either stirred into a glass of filtered water or blended into a delicious smoothie,’ Carla told FEMAIL.

The Glow formula is a probiotic supernutrient formula designed to promote healthy glowing skin, hair and nails, increased energy, improved immunity and gut health.

Typically, Carla’s smoothies will include the likes of papaya, banana, blueberries, coconut milk and chia seeds.

The beauty mogul (pictured) said sugar ‘upsets the balance of our gut microbiome by feeding pathogenic bacteria in our gut’ and so she steers clear of refined sugars and processed foods

At lunchtime, Carla looks for a ‘good salad mix’ with plenty of ‘leafy greens, seeds and nuts – which are great for your gut microbiome’,’ she said.

She pairs this with a source of protein like fish, tempeh, chicken or legumes like kidney beans.

Dinner is more vegetables with protein, either in the form of a slow-cooked curry, stew, soup or roast.

‘I try and have three vegetarian dinners per week. Veggies, legumes, nuts and seeds are rich in fibre and polyphenols that are so good for feeding your gut microbiome,’ Carla said.

Your gut microbiome is made up of trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microbes. The gut microbiome plays a very important role in your health by helping control digestion and benefiting your immune system and many other aspects of health.

While Carla is mindful of what she eats, she isn’t obsessive and advocates that you eat a little of what you love, whether that’s chocolate or a glass of red wine.

Carla’s dietary tips for youthful skin

1. Steer clear of processed foods and refined sugar: The beauty mogul said sugar ‘upsets the balance of our gut microbiome by feeding pathogenic bacteria in our gut’. She said this ‘can cause digestive discomfort and imbalance, as well as altering how our body handles sugar metabolism, which can impact our cortisol levels as well as cause glycation – which damages collagen’.

2. Focus on fibre-rich foods: The foods you need to eat more of are fibre. Carla explained that fibre ‘slows down the absorption of sugars by your gut while also feeding your gut microbiome and keeping you regular’. ‘The bugs in your gut microbiome feed on fibre to create anti-inflammatory short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which regulate your immune, brain, metabolic and skin health’.

3. Eat three vegetarian meals per week: While Carla looks to include veggies, protein and complex carbohydrates in every meal, she said she always looks to have three veggie meals a week in the evening – and will use legume protein sources like beans and lentils.

4. Include sources of probiotics and prebiotics: Probiotics and prebiotics are vital for keeping the gut healthy and skin thriving. She has a probiotic supplement, Glow, stirred into water or a smoothie every morning before eating.

5. Remember diet and skincare go hand in hand: Carla said it’s important to remember that ‘beauty begins in the belly’ and what you eat and what you put on your skin are related.

BODY

The beauty mogul explained that radiant good health and a glowing complexion don’t just come from what you eat.

Carla also looks after her body through regular moderate exercise like walking and Pilates.

‘I try to walk most mornings. I describe walking as a natural filing system for my brain – it provides mental clarity, gives me energy and helps to set me up for the day,’ Carla said.

She likes to ‘have fun’ and ‘laugh as much as possible’.

‘Laughing and having fun are an important beauty and wellness tip,’ she said.

‘It helps the body to de-stress – which is great for gut health and skin health – and it gives you a glow that no amount of cosmetics can replicate.’

Finally, Carla (pictured) shared her top skincare tips, and the products she uses on her face every single day; she loves natural skincare products as much as possible

SKIN

Finally, Carla shared her top skincare tips, and the products she uses on her face every single day.

‘After I get home from my morning walk, the first thing I do is stir Glow Inner Beauty Essential, Collagen Inner Beauty Boost and Omega Elixir into water,’ she said.

‘This combination helps to keep my belly happy and skin glowing from the inside, out.’

Carla also takes a supplement for her painful period pains and breast tenderness – the Supergenes PMS Support.

She cleanses with Sodashi’s Calm Clay Cleanser, and uses a Probiotic Skin Refiner to gently ‘exfoliate and infuse my skin with hydration’.

She uses The Beauty Chef’s own Glow F.A.C.E oil into her skin and neck:

‘It’s a super lightweight formula which I love and although it feels like a face oil, it’s more accurately a supernutrient formula that reduces fine lines and wrinkles, firms and tones the skin, while simultaneously balancing and strengthening.’

In the evening, she will do similar, and will also add a moisturiser – Emma Lewisham’s Supernatural Crème is her favourite – to her regime.

Carla likes to use The Beauty Chef’s Flora Fix Balm on her lips and eyes, particularly during the winter ‘when the delicate skin around my eyes is even drier than normal’.

‘One hour before bed, I take two Sleep Support capsules to help me drift off to sleep,’ she added.

‘This product helps relieve restlessness and nervous energy, as well as promote a restorative sleep.’

She said she always sleeps better after having it and ‘never wakes up groggy’.

When Carla (pictured) shared the news that she turned 50 this week, fans of The Beauty Chef were in disbelief, with many saying she looks like she is in her 20s

When Carla shared the news that she turned 50 this week, fans of The Beauty Chef were in disbelief.

‘I’m sorry what! You look amazing. Give me that youth,’ one commenter wrote.

‘No way 50. 26 to 29. That’s why I know her products work,’ added another.

Carla Oates famously came up for the idea for The Beauty Chef when her daughter started to struggle with chronic eczema a decade ago.

She started making ‘lacto-fermented foods’ for her daughter at home and quickly noticed ‘a big difference’ in her general well-being.

The Beauty Chef business spawned from here – a business which comprises not only serums, balms and lotions, but also powders that you mix with water or put into smoothies.

The powders are packed with superfood ingredients like macqui berries, zinc and antioxidant-rich grape skins, which all help with inner and outer health:

‘Our gut is where 70 per cent of our immune system lies, where we metabolise hormones, neutralise pathogens, make detoxifying enzymes and where we make nutrients,’ Carla previously told FEMAIL.

‘So much of what goes into our digestive system can impact our skin.’

The Beauty Chef is now stocked at Net-a-Porter, Free People, Selfridges, Goop and Anthropologie – among others.
