A neglected puppy who was completely bald when he was rescued has undergone an incredible transformation. Pearl was four months old when she came into the RSPCA’s care in April.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was rescued from a house in Newcastle-upon-Tyne after a concerned member of the public contacted the charity.

At the time she had no fur after her owners failed to treat her serious skin disease and she was also severely underweight.

RSPCA Inspector Rowena Proctor took Pearl to the vet where she was given medication and put on a special diet.

The pup has since been recovering at the RSPCA’s Felledge Animal Centre.

And she is now the picture of health as all her fur has grown back and she has put on weight.

Pearl, who is described as excitable and loving, will soon be looking for a loving forever home.

Ms Proctor said: “The transformation she has undergone is absolutely amazing.

“She looked more like a seal than a puppy when I rescued her – now she looks just how you would expect and is so healthy and happy.

“She is full of energy and life and is very excitable and also very loving too.

“She will be available for rehoming with Felledge soon once she has finished her medication and has had a little bit more training.”

It comes as the RSPCA, which has seen a 13 percent rise in neglect cases amid the cost of living crisis, has launched its Christmas fundraising appeal.

Ms Proctor added: “I am so thrilled to see how she now looks thanks to the dedicated staff at the RSPCA centre.

“But sadly calls to the RSPCA about neglect like this case have risen as the cost of living crisis bites and with more people struggling, we expect more animals will be neglected and abandoned by owners who can no longer afford to care for them.

“This is why we have launched our winter appeal to help raise funds so we can keep rescuing and rehoming pets in need like Pearl – and we are urging the public to support us.”
