The leaders of the revolt were arrested and imprisoned without trial. The violence was part of an ongoing struggle against British colonial rule. Kenya gained independence in December 1963.

64 years ago (1958) The first female peers took their seats in the House of Lords following the Life Peerages Act. They were described as “making history without unduly disturbing it”.

Among them was sociologist and criminologist Barbara Wootton, Baroness Wootton of Abinger.

21 years ago (2001) A US postal worker became the third person to be infected by anthrax causing mass panic. There were 18 cases of anthrax poisoning and five deaths in the weeks following the September 11 attacks.

The main suspect, government scientist Bruce Ivins, committed suicide in 2008.
