I almost missed my train because parents didn’t control their unruly children – I was told I ruined people’s day for getting angry, but I think I’m in the right

A woman who wanted to enjoy the sunshine in peace when she travelled from London to the beach has sparked an online debate about fellow train users who failed to keep their children in check.
The anonymous woman, known only as Eve and believed to be UK-based, took to Reddit, where she revealed in a post that she was almost unable to board her train due to unruly children, garnering sympathy from other forum users.
In her post, she wrote: ‘Travelled from London to the seaside, had to change the train on the final leg and all passengers had to move from 10 carriages to 4 meaning that it got super packed. 28C. Middle of nowhere. Next train in 30 min.
‘There were approximately 20, maybe 30 people still trying to get on, including me, people on the train were tight, but if you are familiar with London trains in rush hour you know there is always space for at least 6 more. I noticed that in one of the carriages people stopped mid way of the aisle.’
She shared a hilarious transcript of a conversation between herself and other passengers after ‘she approached the entrance and poked her head in’.

EVE: Please move down the carriage so more people can get on
PASSENGERS: There is no space
EVE: I can see there is space at the back, if everyone moved to the back it would open up more space
PASSENGERS: There is no space, there are children sitting on the floor
EVE: Well, children need to get up so more people can get on
PASSENGERS: There is no space (from all directions from various people but especially from an old woman standing directly in front of me)
EVE: What do you want me to do? I need to get on this train we all paid for a ticket
PASSENGERS: There is no space, there are children sitting on the floor
EVE: I DON’T CARE that there are children sitting on the floor, make them stand! “I don’t care there are children sitting on the floor! I’m getting in” and I got in’.
She said ‘the old woman automatically takes one step back. I have no problem nesting myself in the corner with my back to everyone.
Old woman: You just made everyone’s day worse
EVE: I don’t care!
Enraged, a disgruntled Eve told Reddit: ‘I’m getting antsy as they announced that doors will be closing.
She said she ‘arrived at the destination 15 minutes later’ and that ‘when she got off she looked back and the vast majority of kids that came out the train were between 8 and 12’.
Unsure as to whether she had navigated the situation fairly, Eve ranted to two friends of hers, both mothers – and it was their words which prompted her to speak on the thread: ‘Both avoided agreeing with me which makes me think both think I’m an a******’.
However, she was reassured, as her partner agreed with her.
While asking the thread for their honest opinions, she did preface the post by standing by her actions, only feeling remorseful for her tone: ‘I honestly don’t care if an 8-year-old wants to sit so another human misses the train.
‘Some poor souls didn’t get on at all. IMO people were selfish – no sympathy for other people.
‘I think I might be the a****** because my words were short. Some might say that it was hot so I should have understood, as well as prioritising those kids and having more empathy,’ she wrote.
Respondents to the post, which received 3,800 upvotes, were overwhelmingly on Eve’s side.
The first comment said: ‘Not the a******, kids sitting down on the floor is actually dangerous and prevents ease of exit in the event of an emergency’.
Another agreed: ‘Dangerous for the kids too. If people need to escape or leave quickly, I doubt they’ll remember not to trip on or step on the kids’.
A further forum user made a South Park reference, writing: ‘Major South Park vibes, here. Kick the baby!’
Amid the other respondents who were supportive of Eve, one was dumbfounded that ‘these kids couldn’t stand for 15 minutes?!?! Wow!’
In a similar vein, another Redditor said: ‘Back in the day, grade school age children were told to stand so adults could sit, on the theory that they were physically more able to do so.’
And another took to the post to express their disdain for some modern parents, writing: ‘Nowadays, the parents believe their precious wittle miracles are too delicate to survive the world. Well, then they shouldn’t survive, parents. Survival of the fittest, and your kid wasn’t fit. Or maybe they fit just enough for me to shove them out of my way. Whatever.’
