Fans of Lyle’s Golden Syrup are shocked after an online post has revealed what the image of the famous yellow lion on the front of the tin actually depicts.
The established British brand has been selling golden syrup since 1881 and it is a beloved topping for porridge and pancakes as well as a baking essential.
Many shoppers had led themselves to believe that the syrup’s logo shows a lion lying down for a nap, but they have since come to realise that the lion is in fact dead.
Twitter user Victoria Nightingale sparked dismay online as she shared the revelation, writing: ‘Tell me I’m not the only one who didn’t realise the lion on Lyle’s Golden Syrup packaging is depicted dead?!’

Abram Lyle, who built the brand’s first sugar refinery, had strong religious beliefs and took the image of the lion from the story of Samson in the Bible’s Old Testament.
According to the scriptures, Samson was gifted incredible strength by God and one day tore a lion apart with his bare hands.
He later found a swarm of bees and honey inside the carcass.
Samson ate some of the honey, gave some to his parents and said: ‘Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet.’
Based on the story of Samson from the Bible’s Old Testament, the lion is in fact dead and its carcass is swarming with bees
The tin therefore shows a lion lying dead with a swarm of bees buzzing around its body.
Horrified Reddit users had already made the revelation, with one commenting: ‘This is the most depressing thing I’ve learnt since I found out that the little piggy who went to market was not going on a shopping trip.’
Another said: ‘My whole life has been a lie.’
One user said: ‘I did not know this! That’s pretty dark.’
