People reveal receiving random items in their Christmas food shops they placed months ago – including 144 toilet rolls, five kilos of bananas and expensive wine

Embarrassed shoppers are revealing how they forgot to changed their supermarket holding orders ahead of Christmas, leaving them with random and unnecessary items being delivered.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, author Fran Hill, from Warwickshire, revealed a Tesco driver delivered her three bottles of expensive wine, four fresh tuna steaks and 144 toilet rolls after she placed the order to secure the slot for her festive delivery and forgot to change it.
Many supermarkets will allow shoppers to place order online months in advance in order to secure a delivery slot, which can be hard to come by in the days up until Christmas.
The items in the order can be edited until midnight the day before delivery, so many shoppers will add random items to their online basket and change them closer to the date.
But dozens of shoppers revealed they have placed the order and then entirely forgotten about them, meaning they’ve been delivered dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid and expensive whiskey they left in their basket.

Replying to Fran’s post, hundreds of people revealed they’d been in the same boat.
‘Sainsburys man: So how many boxes of Persil do you want to keep? Me: None Sainsburys man: Oh… Cringe,’ one person wrote.
‘I did this with a £345 bottle of champagne. Almost forgot to switch it,’ said another.
‘144 toilet rolls. Just imagine what they’d have been worth in 2020,’ joked one person.
‘From a Tesco driver currently out delivering, that’s a pretty good holding order! Our usual forgotten holding order is a banana! You have no idea how often we deliver ONE BANANA! Not even a bunch!’ said another.
‘Oh no! Memories of being in a remote Lake District cottage with the three kids and all that arrived was gin and wine,’ said another.
‘Six bottles of Prosecco is my standard holding item – wouldn’t go to waste of just that turned up,’ joked another.
‘I once had FIVE carrier bags of leeks to deal with and another time I bought a bag of bird seed so large – the man had to drag it to my front door and help me lift it over the threshold. Solidarity! You’re my online shop hero,’ said one.

‘I forgot I did a click and collect from Tesco until i got the email, the 20 cans of Pringles are still in the boot of my car because I’m not brave enough to bring them in yet,’ revealed another X user.
‘I once did this. Received a bottle of gin and 4 jellies. The delivery man said it was his best delivery of the week,’ commented one.
‘My mate, in the early days of online deliveries was not tech savvy. She set up account, ordered one pack of sweeteners, then chickened out and just shut the laptop. A few days later, a delivery man turned up with said sweeteners in a carrier bag. I tried not to laugh,’ added another.
‘Thanks for the reminder.. need to change mine tomorrow or we are just getting beer, aperol and Prosecco,’ added one.
User revealed they’ve had toilet roll, butter and dishwasher tablets delivered
‘I forgot to cancel a potential order for my inlaws once and Tesco surprised them with a delivery of one bottle of lime cordial,’ said one.
‘I’ve just removed the £70 bottle of champagne from my Waitrose basket and put in my proper order. Glad I didn’t forget,’ said one.
‘Mine is 5 lots of dishwasher tablets. So far only left them on once but it is a worry,’ added one.
‘Oh no!! Ocado phoned me to remind me to edit my order. Mine was a bottle of champagne, bottle of gin, a giant box of cat food and a turkey,’ said one person.
‘The danger shop! Argh. I live in fear of receiving a bottle of Lanson and some kitchen roll for our family of four,’ joked another.

It comes after British shoppers shared the most bizarre substitutions they’ve received from supermarkets after actress Daisy Haggard revealed she made a Gin and Tonic with frozen peas when Sainsbury’s failed to delver ice she ordered.
Taking to Twitter in 2020, she wrote: ‘Dear @sainsburys .. thank you for thoughtfully substituting my 2kg of ice order with FROZEN PEAS. My G&T is outstanding!’ she wrote.
Clearly striking a chord with many Twitter users, the tweet quickly racked up more than 24 thousands likes, with hundreds replying to reveal their own odd substitutions including one person who got bazuka gel instead of brioche buns and another who received a wooden spoon as a substitute for tinned chickpeas.
‘Brilliant! I ordered scotch pancakes last week and got a tub of royal icing instead, as much as the kids tried to persuade me, I couldn’t give them icing for breakfast,’ one parent wrote.
‘The greatest substitution I ever had was frozen raspberries instead of toilet rolls,’ said another.
‘I had a tub of Cadbury’s Heroes replaced with 6 bags of onions rings this week! Not even close!’ added a third.
Another parent said: ‘Ocado sent me chocolate raisins this morning as a sub for my son’s chocolate brownies. He was not a happy child!
‘We ordered parmesan and instead got 6 pints of milk. Six! I don’t even drink milk. Did they think we were going to make the cheese ourself?!’ questioned another.
Others revealed their substitutions that left them scratching their heads, including one woman who said her friend go a curly wurly in place of tampax, and another who ordered and ice-cube tray and got a fridge magnet instead.
‘My step-mum ordered Bran flakes (breakfast cereal) got subbed with dog biscuits,’ said one.
