A pub was criticised for shaking up its menu to reduce food waste and save on costs.

The boozer – located in Victorian town Ballarat in southeastern Australia – stopped serving sides with its main meals.

Instead of giving customers greens on the side, they now have to order them separately.

The menu update explained: “Please take the time to read this before you order.

“To keep our prices and wastage down, salad and vegetables are no longer presented with your meal. They are still available to purchase as a side.

“Appreciate your understanding.”

The menu change received a mixed response when it was posted about on Reddit.

Some were outraged by the update and questioned why punters would continue to go to the pub.

One commenter wrote: “At this point, why even bother going out for a meal?”

Another sarcastically said: “Next will be bring your own plates and cutlery.”

And a third added: “There are other methods of countering that though – such as asking if they would like an included salad when ordering. This feels like a method to increase profit, not reduce food waste.”

Despite the backlash, some defended the move though.

Plenty pointed out that many customers snub side salads anyway.

A Redditor argued: “I actually don’t hate this idea, as someone who worked in hospitality the number of times plates came back with veggies or the side salad not even touched.

“Makes a lot of sense to me to reduce waste AND keep their costs down by not wasting time prepping and sending out food that won’t get eaten.

“Don’t love that they charge for it if you want it though.”

Another agreed: “Worked in a pub years back. About half of the plates came back to the kitchen with the salad untouched.”

And a third added: “I work as a waitress and most of the time people leave the salad bowl untouched, we cannot reuse it because it was already served so it will go in the bin. Same with chips.”
