Shoppers rush to high street chain for huge discounts 'better than Christmas' in closing down sale | The Sun

SHOPPERS are rushing to a major high street department store for huge discounts.

House of Fraser's Birmingham store is flogging designer items in a major sale that's been dubbed "better than Christmas."

It comes after the high street chain shut up shop in two locations as it battles to keep a presence in the retail sector.

Now Birmingham's city-centre Hosue of Fraser has even been turned into an outlet and had its retail footprint cut by half.

The store used to operate across all eight floors but only four floors remain in use.

But shoppers have been taking advantage of price cuts across all the store's stock – and the average customer is bagging at least 20% off their shop.

While Frasers Group won't confirm if the store is closing permanently, the outlet is filled with signs that read "all stock must go."

These big "closing down" style events usually precede a store closure.

But shoppers are thrilled with the savings.

One posted about the sale on Facebook and said: "It's almost become a bit of a jumble sale, but the savings are decent."

Those who have caught wind of the discounts online have also posted on Facebook about the outlet.

"I've got to go there now," said another shopper.

And a salesperson told Birmingham Live: "It's better than Christmas!

"But we've got lots of designer products at great prices so more people have been coming into the store again to see what we're selling. Long may that continue."

Shoppers can get money off big-name brands including Calvin Klein, Superdry, Paul Smith, Reebok, Ted Baker, Diesel, Gant, Ralph Lauren, Levi's, Champion and Tommy Hilfiger.

Big appliances made by the like of Smeg are also up for grabs as part of the 20% off sale.

But not every customer is satisfied with the discounts and one said on Twitter that the "price cuts aren't deep enough."

In November, House of Fraser closed it's Westfield branch in Shepherd's Bush, while its department store in High Wycombe shut for good in January.

It has also been previously reported that the department store will close its Cardiff branch in the iconic Howells building after it recently launched a major clearance sale.

It follows a string of House of Fraser closures in recent months after the retailer admitted that they are unprofitable due to business rates.

House of Fraser has also temporarily closed its Norwich store which it plans to reopen in the autumn following its refurbishment.

House of Fraser was saved from collapse by billionaire businessman Mike Ashley back in 2018.

But while the deal saved the chain's 59 stores and 17,000 workers who were facing the axe.

Many more stores have closed in recent years and only 30 department stores remain.

Paperchase has upped its closing down sale to 50% off today after the stationary chain fell into administration at the end of January.
