Staggering 96% of teachers will struggle to afford holidays in 2023

With holiday prices soaring, it’s only natural to avoid taking a trip during the peak summer months.

However, along with parents, there’s another cohort of people who have no choice but to take trips during these more expensive and busier times: teachers.

But a shocking new report has found that the majority of teachers will struggle to afford holidays at all this year.

New research from Nationwide has found that 96% of teachers will find it tough to pay for a holiday in 2023 – with a quarter saying they won’t go away at all.

Likewise, more than six in 10 teachers say that a holiday abroad is less likely for them this year – citing cost of living pressures as the reason.

It comes following the teachers’ strikes earlier this month, in an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions – as the cost of living pushes many to their limits.

To help those in the profession, numerous holiday platforms have launched deals and offers this summer, available through Discounts for Teachers.

These offers range from 25% off hotel booking sites like hotels.com and booking.com, money back on flights with Jet2holidays, and even discounts from various cruise companies across the world.

Teaching professionals heading to a UK resort this year can also snap up deals at Butlin’s, Haven and Hoseasons.

Storm Postlethwaite, the managing director of Discounts for Teachers, said: ‘The cost-of-living crisis has made it incredibly difficult for teachers in the UK to enjoy holidays.

‘Our survey reveals that they’re always paying a premium when travelling abroad, despite the common misconception that teachers are able to enjoy multiple holidays a year.

‘Educational professionals work incredibly hard and deserve to enjoy their holidays stress-free, yet financial pressures often inhibit this and make it harder for them to go on holiday.’
