Two friends’ night out hack failed when they stashed their coats behind a bar’s toilet wall – only to find them missing later.

Maisy Armstrong, 19, and her friend Harriet Baillie, 20, were delighted with their innovative strategy to avoid carrying bulky winter jackets all night, but were later baffled when they disappeared.

The pair filmed their exciting hidden nook in a viral TikTok – which has racked up more than 2.5 million views – during an outing at Bar Twenty One in Ipswich, Suffolk last month.

In the clip, Maisy can be seen grinning as she places a faux fur coat with a loose wall panel inside an out-of-order toilet at around midnight.

However two hours later Harriet, 20, records their return to uncover the coats – only to realise the panel has been moved and they’d been ‘stolen’.

‘It definitely didn’t go to plan,’ Maisy, a trainee yachtswoman, said. ‘There wasn’t a cloakroom so we were carrying our coats around and we couldn’t be bothered anymore. I had a big fur jacket.

‘When we went to the toilet one said it was out of order but we noticed that the wall was loose and saw a gap so we thought it was a really smart idea.’

The teenager explained that they didn’t think anyone would enter the cubicle – ‘but they obviously did’.

‘Someone must have gone in and thought “I want those coats” and taken them,’ she added.

Maisy praised the ‘really helpful’ bartender if anyone had handed in a coat, admitting they ‘panicked a bit’.

The relieved reveller says she found the coats – which cost around £30 each – hanging over a booth, and the pair rushed over to grab them before telling staff and leaving the venue.

The 19-year-old admits she thought she was ‘being smart’ by using the gap in the wall – but says she’ll be carrying her coats or paying to keep them in a cloakroom in future.

‘When you think you’re absolute geniuses for putting your coats behind the toilet wall until you come back at the end of the night and they’re gone,’ she wrote in a caption capturing the experience in a TikTok.

Commenters appeared baffled by Maisy and Harriet’s hack.

‘How the hell,’ one baffled user questioned. ‘Unless they saw you put them there and went back after you left.’

‘Why would it be a good idea to put your coat there?,’ another asked.

‘Yeah, the wall probably fell off and they saw it,’ a third suggested. ‘It doesn’t look secure at all.’

However, not everyone was so critical, as others shared their own unique hiding spots.

‘My friends used to do this at the bottom of the trash bin and also got their jackets stolen lol,’ one admitted.

A second person penned: ‘Put mine behind vending machine at concert and was also gone.’

‘We would hide stuff in the dryer at parties back in the day,’ a third admitted.

A spokesperson for Bar Twenty One said: ‘We are so happy our staff could help locate Maisy’s coat.

‘We also think it was a great idea and actually very inventive. Would she like a job?

‘However, we don’t encourage our customers to do this. We’ve taken this very lightly with a smile. Thanks so much to Maisy for supporting our little gem of a bar.’
