Tesco to permanently lose two superstores in a matter of days

The supermarket giant announced several changes to its business at the start of the year, including the closure of some hot delis and in-store counters.

In a statement, Tesco claimed that this was done to “repurpose” the spaces as part of plans to “better reflect” the needs of customers shopping in person.

In addition to the retailer’s purchase of the former high-street brand Paperchase, the company has opened and closed a string of sites across the UK.

This year alone, the supermarket opened two new superstores and revealed plans for 52 new Tesco Express sites and 15 One Stop stores in the latter part of 2023.

But the new additions haven’t come without some closures, two of which will take place in just a matter of days.

The two sites have been spotted with signs in their windows to inform customers of the closures and point them to their nearest store.

Shoppers local to the Kilner Way site will find a superstore nearby in Southey, though Wakefield customers may struggle to locate an alternative.

The area has more than six Express branches nearby, but no Tesco superstores.

According to the company, the decision to close the two sites was made in response to low customer demand in those areas.

It comes shortly after they were converted from discount Jack’s stores into the main Tesco brand in 2022.

The British budget chain is owned by the supermarket giant and now has just 13 sites across the UK after being founded in 2018 to rival the likes of Lidl and Aldi.

However, the remaining sites are expected to close for good too after Tesco announced the end of the chain.
