The psychological thriller directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese follows Leonardo DiCaprio’s Teddy Fields, a U.S. Marshall dispatched to investigate a psychiatric facility on a mysterious island with his sidekick Chuck Aule (Ruffalo). Rewatching with the finale in mind demonstrates Ruffalo’s ingenuity in his choices to conceal Aule’s motives.

One year later, they are the Four Horsemen, renowned stage illusionists whose sold-out Las Vegas show culminates with a bank heist that appears to be real. FBI Agent Dylan Rhodes, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, and Interpol Agent Alma Dray are assigned to investigate how they accomplished it. Despite Thaddeus Bradley’s expertise as a professional illusion debunker, this enigma proves to be difficult to unravel. What follows is a weird investigation in which nothing is as it seems, with illusions, dark secrets, and hidden intentions aplenty, while all concerned are reminded of a fundamental reality regarding this puzzle: the closer you look, the less you see.
