A beauty fan who transformed the texture of her skin by following five simple steps has shared the three most overrated pieces of skincare advice out there – and why you need to stop following them if you want a glowing complexion.
Natalie O’Neill – who has built up a huge social media following on TikTok for sharing her frank and unfiltered beauty advice – said trying to follow all of the advice you read online might be what is causing problems for you.
Instead, you just need to strip your routine back a bit and go back to the basics of double cleansing, tone and moisturise.
‘I’m going to take a hot second to talk about the three things that I think are massively overplayed on social media right now in regards to skincare,’ Natalie said in a recent TikTok clip.

1. Exfoliating is overplayed
The first skincare mistake that’s overrated is exfoliation, particularly every day.
‘Ask any dermatologist and they’ll tell you, you don’t need to exfoliate every single day,’ Natalie said.
‘Skincare brands have products that they want to sell you. and you will use them up quicker if you exfoliate every single day.’
She said if you exfoliate every day, your skin’s barrier will probably struggle and your complexion will look worse.
‘We are conditioned to think that the skin needs exfoliation, but it actually exfoliates itself,’ Natalie said.
‘It has its own natural turnover, it doesn’t need you to interact with it all the time. If you just protect it, keep it hydrated and exfoliate maybe once a week or once every two weeks, you’ll probably have better results with your skin.’

2. Vitamin C can do more harm than good
Lots of skincare experts regularly extol the benefits of vitamin C serums, but Natalie said they can in fact do ‘more harm than good’.
‘Several dermatologists that I follow don’t use vitamin C, it’s not that necessary, and it can actually be one of the most irritating actives to use,’ she said.
Natalie explained that she hasn’t used vitamin C except under her eyes in a ‘very long time’ and she has found her skin is much calmer as a result.
She recommended cutting down your usage and seeing if your complexion is less red and inflamed as a result.

3. Skin cycling is overrated
Finally, the beauty buff said she thinks skin cycling – which is the practice of using your products strategically to maximise results and incorporating rest days, so you don’t overdo it – doesn’t always work.
‘Skin cycling has helped lots of people and that’s a good thing, but it’s also not a really new concept and not everybody needs chemical exfoliants and retinoids,’ Natalie said.
She said you will probably see better results if you incorporate something into your skincare routine and stick with it, rather than chopping and changing all the time.

Previously, Natalie shared the five steps that have completely transformed the texture of her skin.
She said double cleansing is absolutely critical to making sure your skin is clear, plump and hydrated – and it’s the ‘most effective way of preventing clogged pores’.
Natalie typically uses one of her cleanses to remove the makeup and debris from the surface of the skin. For this, she loves to use an oil cleanser.
Next, she uses a water-based cleanser for 45 seconds to one minute to ensure her pores are completely cleared out before she goes to bed.
‘Second is figuring out what is causing the clogs in your skin,’ Natalie said.
‘If you’re not removing that, then you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle.’

‘Third, I started using a retinoid, and a retinoid is what completely transformed my skin,’ Natalie said.
The beauty buff added that if she had to put her results down to ‘one thing’, it would be using retinoid – and you should use one over all other actives.
Finally, Natalie said she stopped picking her skin and stayed consistent with her routine:
‘It’s boring, but you’ll never see results if you keep chopping and changing,’ she said.
‘You’re never going to achieve results if you keep trying out things you’ve seen on TikTok.’
