This winter’s cosiest trend? The scarf-coat (that’s a coat with a scarf already attached!)

Forget woolly socks and thermals, the fashion-approved way to do winter layering is with a scarf-coat.

Allow me to introduce you to one of the hottest outerwear styles of the season (both figuratively and literally). A scarf-coat does exactly what it says on the tin: it’s a coat that has a scarf attached at the collar.

However, it’s far from being another bonkers high-fashion hybrid (see Balenciaga’s £695 towel-skirt), as it comes with plenty of practicality. Think of it as the ultimate two-in-one winter warmer.

The scarf-coat first appeared when Swedish brand Toteme released its charcoal style two years ago. With huge pockets, contrast stitching, and an outsized fit, it became a cult piece, seen on every fashion editor.

Now, the High Street has fallen for the trendy design, which banishes any fears about your scarf clashing with your coat.

While the original Toteme embroidered scarf-coat will set you back a hefty £810 (up from £690 when it was first released) there are now lookalike styles that deliver on form and function — and leave you with enough change to buy a pair of gloves.

The White Company’s black scarf-jacket is the best designer doppelganger of the season, thanks to the white stitch detailing and spacious patch pockets. Made from 100 per cent wool, it’s as warm as it is chic, and has the added bonus of the scarf being removable.

Just as versatile is Next’s taupe version, which works as beautifully with dark autumnal tones as it does brights. Wear it as a toasty two-piece, or lose the scarf on milder days.

A camel cover-up is a timeless investment — keep it sleek with Karen Millen’s tailored midi, or add folksy flair to your winter staples with Mint Velvet’s fringed coat.

At the smarter end of the spectrum, Cos’s pinstripe coat and River Island’s navy number, will give office outfits a fashion-forward spin. Both have detachable XL scarves that can be dramatically draped around the neck.

If you’re after something that will layer well over winter jumpers, look no further than Zara’s Manteco collarless coat with scarf. The oversized fit will accommodate the chunkiest of cable knits, while the cosy wool blend provides warmth without adding bulk. Winter layering has never been easier!
