A COUPLE were stunned to find a secret room in their basement – but it was hiding an extremely creepy feature.

Carolyn and Steven Sparks didn't even know their East Sussex home had a basement until they started looking at renovating recently.

The room was never mentioned when they were buying the property, and they had never seen the door before – but what was behind that door was haunting.

The paint was peeling from the walls, there were piles of rubble, and – perfectly tucked into a nook – was a single iron bedframe, rusting and covered in dust.

The married property developers snapped up the Brighton home and planned to refurbish it, but needed a detailed plan drawn up.

During the survey, Steven, 54, and the architect found the door to the secret basement.

But when the architect went down to measure it he didn’t mention a thing.

Carolyn, 42, said: “We discovered there was a basement to the building after we’d purchased the property.

"It wasn’t on the agents’ details, and nor did we see it when we viewed the property.

“It’s easily missed as it’s accessed via a little WC, so not really a room you’d go into and look at in great detail.

“I thought it’d be funny to film as all we could see was cobwebs and said it would feel spooky.

"We didn’t expect to find a single iron bed, so it was definitely a little bit freaky.

“That situation alone, never mind finding a child’s bed down there, just added to the weird situation.”

Carolyn filmed the discovery and uploaded it to social media.

And, she later got to the bottom of the bed mystery – which isn't as creepy as it appears.

The current tenant told Carolyn there was a time when her daughter had to shoot a horror film for a college assignment.

The basement was the obvious choice for the set, but due to the tenant’s health, and the fact she hates spiders, the bed stayed down there.

It also turned out the room was part of the original Victorian house and was used to store coal.

There’s an access hole outside where the coal would’ve been poured down into the basement area.

After the renovations, the only way to access the basement will be through the hallway, but only to make sure there’s access to the pipes in case of emergencies.
