What happened to Hendrix in Neighbours?

Mackenzie Hargreaves (Georgie Stone) has been reflecting on the life she shared with husband Hendrix Greyson (Ben Turland) since Neighbours returned to our screens earlier this week.

The popular character is contemplating a romance with newcomer Haz (Shiv Palekar), who she lives with in the new episodes, which debuted on Amazon Freevee.

Sadie Rodwell (Emerald Chan) has been quick to encourage Mackenzie to take a chance on love, especially after everything she’s been through, insisting that she make her feelings known for her housemate.

It’s clear that her words have left Mack with food for thought but, despite this, she’s still concerned about letting go and moving on after everything she went through during the Aussie soap’s last batch of episodes.

Hendrix, as viewers will recall, was Mackenzie’s husband, with the two having tied the knot in romantic scenes just shortly before Neighbours’ conclusion on Channel 5.

But this love story would ultimately end in tragedy.

If you’re struggling to recall what happened to Hendrix then fear not as we’re on hand to explain everything for you, with a little refresher ahead of Mackenzie’s new chapter.

Hendrix tragically died after his body rejected his new lungs following a transplant which he needed after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.

The diagnosis came after a persistent cough left him concerned, with doctors subsequently revealing that his only available treatment option was a lung transplant.

Despite fears that he wouldn’t receive a new set of lungs in time, Hendrix got a phone call from the hospital, notifying him that they found a match and, after marrying love of his life Mackenzie, he was taken into surgery.

It was a tough night for all of Hendrix’s nearest and dearest, but there was soon reason to be joyful, as Karl notified everyone that the operation couldn’t have gone better.

Mackenzie, on cloud nine, wasted little time in popping into her husband’s hospital room, where she sat by his bedside. Hendrix woke up, delighted to see his wife, believing that this terrifying chapter was at an end.

There was more heartbreak ahead, however, as Hendrix started to have breathing difficulties, and a closer look from the doctors led to the discovery that his body had rejected the new lungs, meaning that he’d only hours left to live.

Mack was heartbroken and thus spent some time with her husband, worried she was running out of time. Hendrix, meanwhile, declined to be sedated, not wanting to miss out on his final moments as he said goodbye to all of his loved ones.

Hendrix subsequently died in heartbreaking scenes.

Mackenzie struggled to process the news while Susan and Karl Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne and Alan Fletcher) broke down in tears.

Two separate tributes were held to honour Hendrix’s memory, one in Melbourne and one in Sydney, with his family members gathering at both to say a proper goodbye.
