A woman has revealed that she was left permanently deformed after a knock-off filler procedure given to her by a dentist in Brazil went terribly wrong.
Mariana Michelini, 34, from Matao, Brazil, was injected with what she thought was hyaluronic acid in December 2020 – but she said it turned out to be a completely different chemical called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which resulted in her face becoming permanently disfigured.
The PMMA made her skin become swollen and puffy – and she has since undergone three different surgical procedures in an attempt to fix the damage done by the botched procedure.
Mariana, who has recently sued the professional who gave her the injections, has documented the entire ordeal on her social media account – in an attempt to make sure that no one else has ‘to go through it.’

But Mariana (seen in September) said it turned out to be a different chemical called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which resulted in her face becoming permanently disfigured

‘I’m suffering a lot, but I have faith that justice will be served, I don’t want other people to go through this,’ she told Newsflash recently. ‘My life has stopped, I’m psychologically broken. I just want my face back’
According to Mariana, she was offered a chance to receive the procedure from an unnamed dentist for free, in exchange for advertising it on her social media accounts, where she had racked up more than 15,000 followers.
She was under the impression that the professional was going to put hyaluronic acid into her face – which is often used prevent wrinkles and keep the skin looking young and fresh.
But months afterwards, in June 2021, her face began swelling up – leaving her shocked and horrified.
‘For the first time, I don’t have nice pictures to post here,’ she wrote on Instagram at the time, while sharing some photos of the aftermath of the procedure. ‘I’m desperate, my [mindset] is shaky and my health is at risk.’
Mariana soon underwent a biopsy and was told by a dermatologist that she was actually injected with PMMA, which can damage the nervous system, as well as cause weakness, numbness, and inflammation in your body – along with many other complications, per NJ.Gov.
But months after getting it her face began swelling up – leaving her shocked and horrified. She is seen in August 2021
In August 2021, Mariana (seen left before the procedure and right in August 2021) revealed she had to get surgery in an attempt to fix her face
She then underwent two more surgical procedures – but she revealed in March 2022 that things had taken a turn for the worse. She is seen in March 2022
‘PMMA is a gel filler. It is a plastic component, so it is not reabsorbed by the body such as hyaluronic acid or collagen, for example,’ one doctor, who worked with Mariana, previously explained.
Mariana claimed that her skin had become ‘lifeless with no nutrients,’ and that doctors believed she was suffering from something called withdrawal from the chemical
In August 2021, Mariana revealed that she had gotten surgery in an attempt to fix her face, with a doctor going under her skin and removing as much of the substance as he could, while still ‘maintaining her structure.’
‘I’ll heal. I’m still swollen, but soon I’ll be brand new,’ she updated her followers at the time. ‘My face is feeling a lot better. Soon all this nightmare will pass, in the name of Jesus.’
She then underwent two more surgical procedures and received 20 hyperbaric chamber sessions – but she revealed in March 2022 that things had taken a turn for the worse.
She claimed that her skin had become ‘lifeless with no nutrients,’ and that doctors believed she was suffering from something called withdrawal from the chemical.
‘The stitches did not hold. I feel ashamed, I don’t leave the house anymore, I feel pain,’ she added. ‘I just want JUSTICE. I ask for your prayers.’
In September, Mariana flew to Porto Alegre to get addition treatment. At the time, she shared a snap of her face covered in stitches, writing, ‘Today we start another stage of this hard journey’
And in an update posting October, she said she was going to continue to ‘fight to reconstruct her face.’ She is seen left before the procedure and right in October 2022

Mariana is still in the process suing the person who gave her the injections. The dentist who performed the procedure has also filed two lawsuits against Mariana – one to prohibit the influencer from sharing her identity and practice name, and another accusing Mariana of defamation.
