  • Ciara Herron, based in the US, explained in a recent TikTok video that she went to the ER after she started to feel a sharp pain on the right side of her stomach
  • She assumed she was suffering from a case of appendicitis, but was left stunned when doctors told her that they ‘couldn’t find’ her appendix
  • She recalled her doctor stating, ‘Your appendix didn’t show up on the CT scan. But there’s no inflammation where your appendix should be, so that’s good’
  • While medical professionals seemed to not be worried by the fact that her appendix was no where to be found, it left Ciara terrified
  • According to social media users, however, this is a lot more common than you’d think
  • Many doctors and nurses left comments on her video, explaining that her appendix is probably in there, but because it’s so small, it’s hard to see on scans

A TikToker has claimed that her appendix went ‘missing – after doctors told her that they ‘couldn’t find’ the organ while performing a CT scan.

Ciara Herron, based in the US, explained in a recent video that she went to the emergency room after she started to feel a sharp pain on the right side of her stomach, and assumed she was suffering from a case of appendicitis.

However, when doctors went to check what was wrong, she was left stunned when they told her that they couldn’t actually find her appendix.

She opened up about the shocking ordeal in an episode of her podcast, Ladies & Tangents, and also posted a clip of it to her TikTok account – where it quickly went viral, leaving many people on the web stunned and confused.

‘I woke up this morning and [the pain] was bad. So, I thought I’d go to the hospital,’ she recalled in the viral video, which has now been viewed more than five million times.

How did Ciara’s appendix go missing?

According to LiveScience.com, one in 100,000 people are born without an appendix.

The function of the appendix – which is located near the intestines in the lower right after of the abdomen – is actually unknown, and people can live without the organ.

‘One theory is that the appendix acts as a storehouse for good bacteria, “rebooting” the digestive system after diarrheal illnesses,’ WebMD reported.

‘Other experts believe the appendix is just a useless remnant from our evolutionary past. Surgical removal of the appendix causes no observable health problems.’

Many doctors and nurses left comments on Ciara’s video, explaining that her appendix is most likely in there, but because it’s so small, it’s hard to see on scans.

One explained, ‘The appendix is very small and can sometimes only be seen if [dye] is injected while being scanned.’

‘I’m a CT tech and it’s totally normal not to be able to see the appendix,’ confirmed someone else. ‘Unless it’s inflamed, it’s so small.’

Doctors quickly ran some tests to figure out what was going on – but what they told her next was not what she expected to hear.

She recalled the doctor stating, ‘First of all, your appendix didn’t show up on the CT scan. But there’s no inflammation where your appendix should be, so that’s good.’

‘I was like, “Where is it?! Why aren’t we more concerned about that?”‘ she added. ‘I don’t like how we’re just glossing over that my appendix is missing. I’ve always had it.’

Her co-host, named Jeri, then asked her, ‘Is it gone still? Did they ever find it?’

Ciara said the doctor told her that ‘it’ll be fine,’ but didn’t divulge any more information about the situation.

And while he seemed to not be worried by the fact that her appendix was no where to be found, it left Ciara terrified.

‘He was basically like, “Eh we couldn’t find it so you’re probably good,”‘ she said. ‘I don’t love that that’s my answer. He was like, “We can’t find it so we don’t know.”‘

One mystery was solved, however; as for the pain in her stomach, that was coming from a cyst that had developed on her ovaries and burst.

According to LiveScience.com, one in 100,000 people are born without an appendix and one in 20 people have to get the organ surgically removed after developing appendicitis, a condition during which the appendix becomes inflamed.

Many people took to the comment section of Ciara’s video to share their thoughts, and some even revealed that they too had gone through similar situations.

‘Went in for the same thing and they did an ultrasound and couldn’t find my appendix so they just gave me some pain meds and sent me on my way,’ wrote one person.

‘They couldn’t find mine for four years and I was in so much pain. In the end it was chronic appendicitis and it was inflamed when they were taking it out,’ added another.

Someone else said: ‘Three [doctors] couldn’t find my aunt’s while it was rupturing because it was in a weird spot. It ruptured as they opened her.’

‘They couldn’t find my appendix so they did an appendectomy and it was wrapped around my bowels,’ read a fourth comment.

Some doctors and nurses even chimed in, revealing that her appendix is most likely in there, just hiding, and that it’s a lot more common than you’d think

‘My English teacher had this happen and it turns out, all her organs were flipped and her appendix was on her left side,’ revealed a different user.

‘Internal organs are sometimes really hard to see,’ wrote a different person. ‘Especially if you’ve eaten recently, or in your case, have fluids in the area.’
