Now that the vast majority of us have mobiles, old-school phone boxes have become somewhat obsolete.

So to ensure the iconic booths remain a staple on our high streets, business owners have been repurposing them – and you can now get a cocktail in a phone box turned bar.

The world’s smallest cocktail bar opened its doors this week, offering mixed drinks from a classic red K2 phone box on Temple Row, Birmingham.

The mini pub is 8ft high and 3ft wide, with just enough space for a customer and a mixologist. But despite its tiny size, it’s a hit among locals.

Three cocktails are available – Jam Jar Daiquiri, Pornstar Martini and Bramley Apple Smash – with each punter getting 10 minutes in the bar.

Today’s the last day to get in on the action, though, so you better be quick.

It’s not a permanent fixture, serving as a limited time pop-up by The Cocktail Club that began on Thursday and is due to finish today (Saturday September 3).

Booking was previously required, but drop-in slots are available from 3pm to 8pm on its final hurrah.

JJ Goodman, co-founder of The Cocktail Club, said: ‘The World’s Smallest Cocktail Bar, as far as we’re aware, is serving a handful of our signature cocktails to the people of Birmingham.

‘We thought, as we are opening the biggest cocktail club we have ever opened here, it would be sensible to open the smallest cocktail club we have ever opened as well.’

He added: ‘It’s been a little bit tricky because I’m 6ft 3ins but I’ve managed to squeeze in there.’

One customer to try out the phone box cocktails was 21-year-old student Kyla Moore, of Edgbaston, Birmingham.

She said: ‘I think it’s a pretty cool idea, but its obviously not really a place you can go on a night with the girls because you can’t all fit in there.’

Kyla continued: ‘The Pornstar Martini was lovely though. The lack of space they had to prepare it in doesn’t seem to have impacted the quality of the cocktail.

‘It just needs a little sound system in there and I’d happily spend more time here. It’s definitely the tiniest bar I have ever drank in.

‘And it’s certainly a good way of giving our classic phone boxes a new lease of life as well.’

It’s far better to see these historic structures being used for something positive, rather than the usual urinal and vandalism targets we’ve seen since phones went smart.

The Cocktail Club’s permanent bar in the city is set to open on nearby Temple Street on September 29.
