Airbnb continues its crackdown on house parties by testing its new ‘anti-party technology’ in the US and Canada.

The technology is designed to identify potentially high-risk reservations based on a history of reviews, length of time the guest has been on Airbnb, length of the trip, distance to the listing or if the booking is on a weekday or weekend.

‘The primary objective is attempting to reduce the ability of bad actors to throw unauthorized parties which negatively impact our Hosts, neighbors, and the communities we serve,’ said Airbnb in a statement.

The company said it had been testing a similar system in Australia since October 2021 and found it ‘very effective’.

‘We have seen a 35 percent drop in incidents of unauthorized parties in the areas of Australia where this pilot has been in effect,’

While this becomes a permanent feature in Australia, the company is just rolling out the testing phase in the US and Canada.

Guests who get flagged by the anti-party technology will be unable to book entire homes but will still be able to book a private room or a hotel room through Airbnb.

This new system will be an updated version of the company’s ‘under-25′ system that’s been in place since 2020, Now instead of enforcing an age limit, the system will scrutinize guests who are booking locally.

In June, Airbnb permanently banned parties in properties after first introducing the policy as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The San Francisco-based tech company said it saw a 44% year-after-year drop in the rate of party reports since implementing the policy in August 2020.

It’s unclear if the feature will be implemented in other countries but it seems likely as the company solidifies its anti-party stance.
