The Crown’s highly anticipated fifth season will finally land on Netflix this week with major insight into the Royal Family. Actress Elizabeth Debicki opened up about playing Princess Diana and slipping into the famous revenge dress.

The Crown follows the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II after she succeeded the throne in 1952.

The upcoming season will depict the events during the 1990s which was known as the Royal Family’s most “tumultuous” decade.

The instalment was also met with controversy on the topic of accuracy as well as sensitivity following the recent death of the Queen.

Despite this, The Crown season five will premiere this week with a new cast and new details about the Royal Family.

This includes insight into Prince Charles (played by Dominic West) and Princess Diana’s highly publicised divorce.

Viewers will also see the aftermath of the Royal break-up when Princess Diana embarked on a new romance with Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla).

While discussing season five, Elizabeth opened up about portraying the late Princess of Wales and wearing the iconic dress, which has been interpreted as having been worn in revenge after the televised admission of adultery by her husband Charles.

She admitted: “It fascinated me how entranced people were with that dress.

“When it became known that I had the part, I received these text messages saying congratulations,

“[But] there was also a huge amount of text messages about the Revenge Dress, ‘Do you get to wear the Revenge Dress?’ ‘Oh my God, you get to wear the Revenge Dress!'”

Elizabeth detailed wearing the outfit felt “very significant and quite powerful, but also it provoked something in me as an actor”.

She added: “I can’t really explain it.

“It’s pretty incredible that a dress would represent a moment in history, or that this human’s life would represent so much and become so iconic.”

She told Entertainment Weekly: “So that was a big day on set for me!”

Season five will also introduce Prince William (Rufus Kampa) and Prince Harry (Will Powell) who fans saw for the first time after Netflix released images.

The show will also depict Prince Andrew’s (James Murray) separation from the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson (Emma Laird Craig).

Another storyline will include Prince Phillip’s (Jonathan Pryce) close friendship with Penny Knatchbull (Natascha McElhone).

Throughout the years, Penny was dubbed the “keeper of secrets” for Prince Philip, which alluded to their close friendship, however many speculated the Prince was unfaithful.

This was met with major criticism from the Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter.

He told The Sun: “Coming just weeks after the nation laid Her Majesty to rest next to Prince Philip, this is very distasteful and, quite frankly, cruel rubbish.

“The truth is that Penny was a longtime friend of the whole family. Netflix is not interested in people’s feelings.”

The Crown season five will premiere on Netflix on November 9.
