Samsung has just unveiled two new mid-range handsets, the Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A34 5G. Despite the more affordable price tag, these Samsung phones don’t skimp on big-budget features, with mammoth 5,000mAh batteries to last 48-hours between charges, water-resistant cases, and support for speedy 5G downloads.
Both new entries in the Galaxy A are available to order today, with the first phones starting to ship on March 29, 2023. For those looking to upgrade to a new Samsung phone, we’ve rounded up all of the best deals.
The new Galaxy A34 5G starts from just £349 – that’s half the cost of the latest flagship Galaxy S23 (something even the best Galaxy S23 deals won’t be able to change!) while the Galaxy A54 5G starts from £449. Both of these handsets support microSD card expansion, so you can add up to 1TB of extra storage for all of your photos, music, videos, games, and apps.
Short on time? The best Galaxy A34 5G deal is currently available from the Samsung online store, where you’ll get a pair of Galaxy Buds2 wireless earbuds worth £139 included for free. Galaxy A54 5G: Everything you need to know
On paper, the Galaxy A54 5G is punching well above its weight.
Samsung has fitted a 6.4-inch AMOLED display. Better yet, it’s a 120Hz high-refresh rate panel, so you can expect silky-smooth scrolling and system animations, as well as some fast-paced gaming. The edge-to-edge screen is only broken by a small hole-punch for the 32-megapixel front-facing camera for selfies and video calls.
On the back, you’ll find a triple camera system with a 50-megapixel main camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor for improved Portrait Mode photos.
As you’d expect from a 2023 handset, Samsung has equipped this triple-camera with all of the usual photography tricks – night-time photography to capture images in tough low-light environments without relying on the LED flash, arty ultra-wide angle shots, and portrait shots with DLSR-like bokeh.
Under the bonnet, the Galaxy A54 5G is fuelled by the Samsung-designed Exynos 1380 system-on-a-chip, coupled with 8GB of RAM. Samsung has fitted this handset with support for fast Wi-Fi 6 downloads indoors and next-generation 5G speeds outside. Keeping those brains ticking along is a 5,000mAh battery, which Samsung says has enough juice to go between recharges every 48-hours, although we’ll need to do our own testing to put that claim through its paces.
Everything is protected with a IP67 rating, which means the Galaxy A54 5G can withstand fresh water up to a depth of one-metre for around 30 minutes without issue. That means accidental G&T spillages, high-dives into the toilet bowl, and rain showers shouldn’t trouble this handset …although it doesn’t mean that you’ll be able to use it like a GoPro for underwater filming on holiday.
Samsung Galaxy A54 5G starts from £449 for 8GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, and maxes-out at £499 for 8GB of RAM / 256GB. Both models include the ability to add up to 1TB of extra storage via microSD card – something that Samsung has dropped from its flagship Galaxy S23 phones.
Galaxy A34 5G: Everything you need to know
Samsung has fitted the Galaxy A34 5G will a generous 6.6-inch AMOLED display, which bleeds to the very edge of the chassis. This all-screen design is only interrupted by a small U-shaped intent at the top to house the 32-megapixel selfie camera (that same sensor found on the pricier Galaxy A54 5G).
Galaxy A34 5G owners will be treated to a 120Hz high-refresh rate panel for buttery-smooth scrolling and fast-paced mobile games. Unlocking the phone (and authenticating contactless payments, opening banking apps, and other secure tasks on your handset) is handled by the fingerprint sensor housed under the screen.
Like the Galaxy A54 5G, there’s a hefty 5,000mAh battery cell to keep you away from the plug. Samsung says you should expect to be able to go 48-hours without charging the battery, although we’ll need to test this ourselves.
When the battery icon turns red, Samsung has fitted 25W fast-charging via USB-C (that’s the same cable used for most modern laptops, Apple iPad, Nintendo Switch, and more – so you’ll only need to pack a single charger for your next trip).
Flip over the phone, and you’ll find the triple-camera system and all of the usual photography tricks that people expect from their phones – including night-time photography modes to peer through the gloom with blinding your subject with the flash, ultra-wide angle shots, pin-sharp close-ups with a dedicated Macro photography mode, and portrait shots with DLSR-like bokeh.
In terms of numbers, Galaxy A34 5G has a 48-megapixel main point-and-shoot lens, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and 5-megapixel macro set-up.
Powering everything is the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 system-on-a-chip, coupled with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, depending on the model. Wi-Fi 5 support is included for speedy downloads indoors, while 5G takes care of that when out-and-about. There’s also the ability to add up to 1TB of extra storage via microSD card – something that Samsung has dropped from its flagship Galaxy S23 phones.
Finally, the case is rated IP67, which means it can withstand an unplanned bath in fresh water up to one-metre deep for half an hour. That means accidental G&T spillages, high-dives into the toilet bowl, and rain showers shouldn’t trouble the Galaxy A34 5G.
Samsung Galaxy A34 starts from £349 for 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, maxing out at £399 for 8GB of RAM / 256GB of storage.
