Bethesda has confirmed Fallout 5 but there is a long wait ahead to play it

The original Fallout released in October 1997 and developers Bethesda are taking the month to celebrate the franchise for its 25th anniversary.

Interplay Entertainment were the original creators of the series, developing the first two entries in the franchise, along with Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel.

Bethesda stepped in to reinvent the franchise with Fallout 3, creating a game that was more aligned with their other series, The Elder Scrolls, rather than the original turn-based entries.

Now, it is more popular than ever, with Fallout 4 receiving record sales and critical acclaim back in 2015 and Amazon Prime Video are producing a TV adaptation.

The same can’t be said for Fallout 76 though, the MMO entry that launched completely broken to the fury of fans, forcing Bethesda to spend years building it back up.

Earlier this year, the company looked to a more positive future, to Fallout 5, though it is years away. Here is everything we know about the fifth instalment in the post-apocalyptic saga.

What is Fallout 5’s release window?

There is zero point in estimating a release date, as it is years away from hitting shelves.

However, now that the game has been confirmed, estimations can start to be made, but brace for a long wait.

To the horror of Elder Scrolls fans, the sixth instalment has been 11 years in the making and it isn’t exactly close to release either.

Bethesda’s next game, Starfield, is expected to launch in the first half of 2023 and following that Elder Scroll’s 6 hype will begin to ramp up.

Some estimations have been 2026 / 2027 for the next Elder Scrolls, so expect Fallout 5 to come to Xbox Game Pass in the 2030s… definitely a long wait.

What consoles will Fallout 5 be on?

Since Fallout 3, each game has seen a cross platform launch, meaning they were available on the Xbox, PlayStation and PC.

However, Bethesda has subsequently been bought out by Microsoft to the tune of $7.5 (£6.78) billion.

Since then, Starfield was confirmed to be exclusive to Microsoft, meaning it is only coming to the Xbox Series X, Series S and PC – not PS5.

There is a strong possibility that all Bethesda releases will be exclusive to Microsoft from now on, so prepare for bad news if you are an Elder Scrolls fan with a PS5.

The same could be true for Fallout, though considering it is so far away, it’ll likely be on whatever console comes after the Xbox Series X.

What stage of development is Fallout 5 in?

The game is in the earliest stages of pre-production, with Bethesda likely just throwing around ideas in the office at this point.

In late 2021, Bethesda’s director and executive producer Todd Howard said there is a “one-pager” for Fallout 5.

What is on that page is possibly no more than just location ideas and gameplay element pitches, but it’s enough to keep hopes alive.

During E3 2022, Todd revealed more, though it was still limited.

He said: "Yes, Elder Scrolls 6 is in pre-production and, you know, we’re going to be doing Fallout 5 after that, so our slate’s pretty full going forward for a while.

“We have some other projects that we look at from time to time as well… [these games] do take a while.

“I wish they came out faster, I really do, we’re trying as hard as we can, but we want them to be as best as they can be for everybody."

For anyone that was born in 2008, the year Fallout 3 came out, they will likely be in their late 20s when they boot up Fallout 5.

There is still that upcoming Amazon Prime Video TV show adapting Fallout for the small screen, so it isn’t all bleak.
