As the country grapples with the rising cost of living, unscrupulous scammers are trying to cash in.
A fake text, pretending to be from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), has been targeting people in recent weeks.
Purporting to come from the government, it asks recipients to click on a link in order to get their energy support bill rebate.
The message reads something like this: ‘GOVUK: You are eligible for a discounted energy bill under the Energy Bills Support Scheme. You can apply here.’
Others have reported receiving similar texts claiming to be from the energy regulator Ofgem.
Of course, it’s a scam – the energy bill support payment doesn’t need to be applied for and will be paid automatically into your account by your energy provider.
Clicking on the link in the message takes you to a realistic-looking webpage where you’ll be asked to fill in your personal and financial information. Which, in turn, will be delivered straight to the scammers.
