Samsung’s Galaxy S23 phones are only nine months old and still some of the best Android phones you can buy thanks to slick designs, solid cameras, and excellent performance. The latter is mostly down to them using Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets in all three phones worldwide, but that could be set to change with the Galaxy S24 series.

A new report from The Elec suggests Samsung will return to its old habit of using Snapdragon chips in the US and its own Samsung Exynos chips in the rest of the world, including the UK. Samsung fans this side of the pond may find this disappointing news for the Galaxy S24 given the noticeable improvement we saw in the S23 phones largely thanks to Snapdragon power across the board.

We were very impressed with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, awarding it a rare five-star rating in our review. For us in the UK, it was the first time for years a Galaxy S phone had used a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset rather than Samsung’s own Exynos – we’d previously bemoaned performance but mostly sub-par battery life on the S21 and S22 phones.

But the Galaxy S23 Ultra brought incredible two-day battery life thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, along with top gaming performance. This latest report suggests the Galaxy S24 Ultra may well escape the switch back to Exynos, with Samsung said to be shipping its new top-tier phone globally with the rumoured Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 – what will likely be the most powerful Android chip ever.

But if you don’t want the wallet-busting Ultra-size phone then you may be out of luck, with the cheaper Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus slated to use Samsung’s own chip in the UK – specifically the just-launched Exynos 2400.

Clues to this change also lie in the launch of the Galaxy S23 FE last week – the £599 phone uses the Exynos 2200 in the UK but in the US has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It’s not the end of the world if Samsung phones on these shores use the Exynos chips, but if history is anything to go by, they are usually inferior to the Snapdragon versions other countries get when it comes to day to day performance, battery life, and performance over a few years.

Even though Google makes Android, Samsung is the most important Android phone maker globally as the only one that can attempt to match Apple’s iPhone sales numbers. It’s unclear exactly why Samsung continues to use its own chips and processors in its phones, particularly when reviewers often declare the Snapdragon versions as superior.

We’ll have to wait until early 2024 when we expect to officially see the Galaxy S24 series unveiled, likely in February.
