British plugs with ‘seriously beefy prongs’ are the world’s best admits American

Sometimes, it feels like there's not much about Britain to be proud of.

The weather is rubbish, traffic is bad, and the price of a pint has shot through the roof.

The rest of the world thinks we're just a soggy, arrogant island responsible for some of history's greatest crimes.

That may all be true, but there's one thing nobody can take from us: plugs.

An American YouTuber has admitted to the world something Brits have known all along, which is that our plugs are way better than anybody else's.

Nils, aka LRN2DIY, has taken to his channel to share his thoughts on British plugs and sockets with thousands of viewers, calling them "perhaps the best designed set in the entire world".

While Nils and his countrymen are forced to contend with the feeble 120V sockets of the New World, Brits get to enjoy 240V of raw whining power for multiple appliances at once.

Nils outlined in a video what he loves about the British plug, from better safety features to easy repair and maintenance.

"British AC plugs and sockets are very different from a lot of the other plugs and sockets sets around the world and they're super different to what we're used to in North America," he said. "This plug and this socket may just be the best designed set in the entire world."

The British 240V plug and socket isn't the most widely used, but it is found in other countries where the British Empire used to get up to its dirty old tricks, from Ireland and Singapore to Hong Kong and India.

Nils points out some things Brits just take for granted, like a long earth pin and insulation at the top of the plug to stop people getting electrocuted. Meanwhile, fuses built into the 'planet-sized' plug itself means that an appliance can't blow a building's entire circuit.

Brits took to the comments to share their views on a rare bit of external validation for their country. "As British born, London in 1985, and an electrician since I was 18 I can confirm we do have great plugs," said one commenter.

Others shared their painful experiences of British plugs. "Having stepped on a plug here in the UK, I can safely say there is nothing more painful," said Cornelius Encyclopedia.

Another wrote: "As a child of the UK I jumped off the top bunk bed whilst playing onto a plug my screams were so loud they are still travelling through the universe 42 years later."

Nils supports this in his video. In a chilling reminder of the danger of British plugs, he said: "Now if you thought waking up in the night walking through the house and stepping on a LEGO was painful…"
