A new artificial intelligence tool has been developed in China that helps authorities monitor how loyal members of the Communist Party are to the government.

According to the Institute of Artificial Intelligence in Hefei, the 'Smart Political Education Bar' analyses users' brainwaves and deploys facial recognition to "discern the level of acceptance for ideological and political education".

A video explaining how the tool works was reportedly taken off of Chinese social media on Sunday, shortly after being announced.

Creators of the tool say it is designed to help 'quantify thought education' and provide 'further education recommendations'.

The deleted video, obtained by the Telegraph, works by making people watch videos about the Chinese Communist Party in a glass booth. Smart cameras and biometrics assess members' "determination to be grateful to the party, listen to the party, and follow the party".

The AI uses this data to generate a score for 'learning attentiveness' and 'emotional identification', which is used to create 'further education' recommendations.

The researchers behind the tool said: "On the one hand, the level of acceptance of ideological and political education of the individual party member can be evaluated, on the other, we can provide real data to continually enrich our educational content."

China is increasingly coming under fire for its use of advanced surveillance technologies, including AI.

A New York Times report claims that the Chinese government is working with a private company to build an AI that can predict crime before it happens using private data from citizens.

A similar tool has been developed in the US which claims to predict crime a week in advance with 90% accuracy.
