The creator of the first robot artist is warning that the rise of artificial intelligence is “apocalyptic” – and we are “hurtling” towards AI taking over from humans.

Aidan Meller, who is behind the ultra-realistic Ai-Da robot, reckons within three years we will face unimaginable changes as man merges with machine.

He also believes Elon Musk is correct when he claims nuclear war would have less impact on mankind than AI.

Aidan says: “I agree with Elon Musk that AI is a bigger threat than nuclear war – but it could also be remarkable too.

“There is every right to feel nervous about the rise of AI.

“We are hurtling towards them taking over humans so we need to have a heart of ethics.

“We are merging with machines – be warned, this is a changing world.”

Today, free exhibition Imagining AI explores the boundary between human and machine the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

Aidan will be there with Ai-Da, who had an art exhibition at Glastonbury where she painted headliner Billie Eilish.

She will meet schoolchildren and create a new piece of artwork for the event.

Aidan adds: “AI is going to show a mirror to the dark side of being human.

“Technology is not good or bad, it’s how we use it. This exhibition will show how it came about and where we want to go.”

Rare letters from Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer and the inspiration for the robot’s name, will be on display at the exhibition. She died aged 36 in 1852.

There will also be one of the two Babbage Engines, the precursor to the first computer which was designed by inventor Charles Babbage. Aidan continues: “We are making leaps – robots will become human and AI is al-ready manipulating social media and elections.

“We have major Ai-Da international news coming in October and November – profound innovations to make her more human-like.

“She’s not conscious but she is a machine you can interact with.

“This project is to raise questions and challenge ethics. The tipping point will be 2025 and by the end of next year we’re all going to be in the Metaverse.”

With new Prime Minister Liz Truss fresh into office, Aidan is calling on governments of the world to unite on AI – and he believes we could one day see robots in office themselves.

He says: “It’s highly possible – AI has an important role in change in government.

“A fair system is important. Global government would have to have rules or it could be negative.

“You don’t want to give the power to the corporates. It could determine our downfall.”

As well as seeing humans and robots cross over, Aidan is convinced we will soon be living on other planets.

He predicts: “We’re going to the Moon and humans will live on Mars.

“We will be a multi-planetary species in our lifetime and robots will be the first on Mars.”

While there is huge potential for the exploration of AI to backfire and wipe out mankind, Aidan says it’s too late to stop now.

The only thing standing in the way of progress is the climate crisis and the dangers planet Earth faces.

He adds: “I don’t think we would want to turn back, but if we don’t solve the environmental issues facing the planet then the issue of technology won’t matter.”

As things currently stand he feels: “We’re all doomed. We have to be careful about what we dream about becoming reality.”
