Elon Musk regains spot as worlds richest man – after losing title last year

Elon Musk has become the world's richest person again, after the value of Tesla shares soared by more than 100% over the last month.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Musk's net worth has shot up to $187.1 billion (£154bn), making him the wealthiest person on Earth once more.

He lost the title in December to Louis Vuitton boss Bernard Arnault, who is in charge of some of the world's top luxury brands.

Musk's wealth plummeted severely following his takeover of Twitter last year.

Not only did he spend $44 billion on the struggling social media giant, the value of shares in Tesla also dropped as investors got cold feet about Musk's leadership.

This meant his fortune fell by over $200bn (£165bn) between November 2021 and December 2022—the largest loss of personal wealth in history.

However, this hasn't posed much of a problem for Musk, whose net worth has increased by $23.3bn (£19bn) since January.

Most of Musk's wealth is tied up in Tesla shares, which explains the increase.

Musk has been engaged in some major cost-cutting at Twitter since taking over the company. He's sacked more than 75% of its workforce, including an additional 200 staff over the weekend.

Musk claimed in November that Twitter was losing $4million (£3.3m) per day. He even joked in February: "Say what you want about me, but I acquired the world's largest non-profit for $44B lol". (£36billion)

These seem like huge sums of money, and that's because they are. In fact, if you started counting from 1 to 1 billion today, it would take you 100 years in total. Now try 187 billion.
